Decided last night that
Jon(Wahoo!),
Chris(CST) and I would head out for a 3/4 day on the Coroloma today.
Jon and Chris got to my house at about 5:00am and we headed down to the
Coroloma (out of
Ventura Sportfishing Center).
Got on the boat and the boat headed out at about 6am sharp (already baited up). There were 20 anglers on board so it was an very lite load (loved it). Bait was so so; mostly small 'choves but had some decent size Sardines in the Mix and also dead stripped squid.
It was about an hour and a half ride out to the backside of Santa Cruz Island. Capt. Chris Volaski said it was probably the roughest he's ever seen coming up though "The Gap"(the space between Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands).
Stupid me forgot my Bonine at home (and I'm one of those anglers that gets sea sick if it's really rough), well it was really rough ..........................and yeah, I did.

(
what an idiot)
Anyway Chris Volaski gave me some stuff that he recommends taking and everything was cool. Chilled up in the wheel house with the capt. until the meds took effect.
Got to the back of Santa Cruz and started out targeting Rockfish to get that stuff out of the way. We were dropping in about 300ft of water (pretty deep). Every one rigged up. I was on a single dropper loop and Chris(CST) and Jon were on doubles. I don't like doing double dropper loop rigs when it's that deep. we were dropping with about 13 - 15 oz of weight (Jon was using over 20 oz.'s) Current was decently strong. Anyway stayed here a while and nothing. The Capt. said he wanted to move so we started bringing 'em up . As I was bringing up my rig, it was killing me. I couldn't figure out why, didn't even remotely feel a fish on. Finally my tip starts really going bendo and I finally brought the first fish of the day to color. Soon as I saw it, I new it would most likely jackpot...
a 7lb. cow V-Rock (Vermillion Rockfish). This thing was pretty much a slab.
Moved to a shallower spot and the bite seemed to die off a bit; though I did manage one Johnny Bass and an almost legal Ling. Chris brought up a decent size Sheepshead and Jon landed a few medium small Rocks.
to move this report along...... we moved locations a couple more times throughout the day. the Bite was pretty slow today with the exception of the second to the last spot being a "hot spot" for 1 -2 inch short of the legal limit Lingcods (frustrating!) I must have landed 3 in that spot...CHris and Jon landed even more.
At the end of the day Chris got some nice fillets, Jon was generous and gave his fish to some of the anglers on the boat and I; of course,
jackpotted with a 7lb. Vermillion Rockfish ......gave the jackpot cash to the boat as a tip from Myself, Jon and Chris
Gonna try to get out on the Coroloma again this coming week.
Jon's got the camera with the pics...soon as he sends them to me, I'll up load them.
