Watched a documentary on NOVA a few months back on the excessive slaughter of sharks in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It showed long liners catching sharks by the thousands over several months time and only cutting the fins off and then tossing the whole remaining carcus back into the ocean. They filmed it from a helicopter , it was a real blood bath.

One of the main food sources for sharks is SQUID. So what we have is the apex predator which feeds extensevely on Squid being eradicated from the seas. Which in turn has caused an explosion of the Squid population. Also on the East Coast the drastic reduction of sharks has caused certain types of Rays which sharks feed on to go beserk which are decemating the shell fish stocks all up and down the east coast.

So there you have it, the demand for shark fin soup must be satisfied. Its all about the Money. "HONEY"

I could "speculate" that their normal habitat may be the deeper waters but are forced into the shallower waters in their hunt for food. The deeper waters not being able to sustain them because of the increased population.
