Your favorite Halibut rig for surf & bays

What's your guys' favorite Halibut rig for surf or bays or both. You may already own it, or it maybe something you're looking to get.
(Give me everything: Rod, Reel, Line, Lure/bait, terminal tackle)

My favorite way to fish Flatties is either from the shore (surf) or off of a jeddy structure (preferably Hollywood beach jeddy or the breakwater of Channel Islands Harbor (Oxnard, CA.)

My choice rig:

Cape Fear - ADV140-70S Advance Tech rod
Spinning / 7' 0 / 6-14 lb. / Mod-Fast 3/16-3/4 oz.
Quantum Cabo PT (or) Boca PT spinning reel
minimum 8# Izor XXX monofiliment
D.O.A. Lures "Terror Eyez" swimbait baited with a 1 inch square peice of squid for taste/attraction.

I fish a 12 Dollar 7' 6-12lb shakespear rod I got from walmart
Daiwa samurai or a $30 shimano
6lb test green maxima
3" big hammer with a 1/4 darter head
Procure Anchovie or sardine oil
This has worked good for me, so far I have hooked up to 4 halies from the surf ( 2 shorts, boke off a 30incher and kept my ist legal) It produced 1 legal for my dad the first time he tried it. I havent fished for halies much but will do it again soon

A $12 Shimano from Big 5. 6'6" fast action rated 6-14. 8# transparent Spider Wire and a 2500 series Spider Wire reel that has 8 ball bearings, $25 at Wal-Mart. Carolina Rig with Motor Oil Red grub. Haven't fished much, but man everything is a fight on light tackle. My personal preference is the lighter, the better fighter. 1/0 Longshank worm hook Big Hammer styled. Anchovie scent.

Tony very good topic however it is very broad. There are many different combinations I personally will use for the surf and the bay, all depending on the different type of fishing technique I am applying.

If I will be fishing grubs, I will personally fish a Metaloid 20 rigged with 6 pound test. I will use this combination in the surf and from jetties.

If I'm drop shotting, I will either use the same combo, or I will use my Curado 200 with 10 pound test.

If I'm fishing swimbaits or jerkbaits, I will use my Curado.

If I'm drifting bait, I'll use my Penn Squidder or my Avet SX with 15 or 20 pound test, again, depending on the situation.

As we all know, I'm fairly new to halibut fishing, and have not caught too many yet, but I've had success with Lip Ripperz, Google Eye soft jerkbaits, and flukes.

Sean, just shut up and post your rig!!! LOL (just kiddn bro) I like your detailed ways.....very much like me (as you already know). Only thing I didn't list is my terminal tackle. I too have different rigs; some for Kayak / Float tube applications, or on a boat, etc. The rig I stated would be for my Surf/Shore applications, as I stated in the lead post.

rod and reel. i switch.

7'6" quantum inshore blue runner medium rod w/abu garcia 6500 on 15lb test.

7' shimano carbomax rod w/cheapo spinner on 6lb test.

most of my rod/reel stuff is cheapo cuz im in law school at USC, anyone want to talk debt? im borrowing $50K a year to study all the time. i know it makes no sense to me too. arg.

Trust me, I know(or should I say my parents check book knew) that level of tuition. I did my first two years at USC until I got tired of the Clicks at that school. It was my dream school and then when I got there, after 2 years I got sick of it. So I left and got my degree from a much better school for what I was majoring in. Of course, I'm still a Trojan fan to the hilt!
