If you want Calico bass and Sand bass before Summer is in full swing hop on a 1/2 day or 3/4 day out of LA. Some boats will go out to Catalina and look for Yellowtail and Whiteseabass if you are lucky. Since the bite has been skiddish only the boats intended to go to the island are going ( ex. Tide Change- Long Beach Sportfishing and Pursuit- 22nd Street Landing ) Say if the Yellows are going off you will see all of the cattle boats out there. Since the season is 50/50 you never know what you will get from one day to the next. A 1/2 day boat out of Newport landing caught limits of Whiteseabass up to 50 pounds about a month ago. The bad thing though about some boats out of LA though is that if you don't get any fish at this time of month will just anchor up fish on a reef and you will just get Perch and maybe some Sheepshead. Another thing about Catalina, you would more than likely to get a Yellowtail or Whiteseabass in the wee hours in the morning. So you would have to hop onboard an overnighter usually they run anywhere from $ 100 - 150. Any who at this point in the early season you would either have and awesome day or and Ok day just catching bass, barracuda, and boneheads plus the regulars. Just whatever you do pay attention to what ever the captain and crew says, it could also affect whether you catch fish or not. Boats out of San diego are usually the boats that get into the thick and healthy Yellowtail. 1/2, 3/4, and overnighters get into the Yellowtail earlier than the LA landings do. If you want early seasoned Albacore and Bluefin go on an Overnighter out of SD, they will go to outer banks and fish kelp and deep structure or the Coronados Islands. Atleast one person will hook into a good fish each trip out of SD whether if it's a Albie, Bluefin, or Yellowtail. GOOD LUCK
