Lnl 1/1/10
Decent way to start off the new year, glad I got my lazy ##### out of bed to go fishing. Definitely quality vs quantity at the lake today. Fishing was sloooow as hell and many people got skunked, I had to work my ##### off for only 3 fish. Met up with Russ and we fished from about 7:30-3:30. I ended the day with 3 fish including a 4.5lber and a 6lber which were caught on orange Lip Ripperz at the creek inlet near the launch ramp. I also lost two more including one that was probably 6-8 pounds right at my feet. Russ ended the day with a fish that was a pretty nice sized, but unfortunately neither of got the quantity we were looking for.
Overall I'm glad I went despite the slow fishing. There has been some weird algae growth all around the lake that I've never seen before at the lake in the winter which is making the water very discolored.

Thanks for the report. Glad you guys were able to pick up a couple decent fish. It sucks when the lake gets all that algae on it.

I would categorize the fishing as slow, but quality fish.
I took my niece and nephew out in a boat for 1/2 day, and we only landed one fish, easily in the 6# range, on a $10.00 Big-5 rod, reel, line combo...LOL, the 2# topshot cost a quarter of the combo cost. Tried to get a pic with my nephew in it but the fish was flopping around too much.
LOL, he was on the internet using my phone with his rod in his lap, and he goes "Uncle Ray, my line is tightening up" so I yell at him to set the hook...he did and I was worried 'cause the drag on the reel was too hurky-jerky for 2# line (I broke some line earlier setting the drag) and I didn't realize how large the fish was (the water had about one foot of visibility) until it was already on the surface.
Pretty much one fish per group seemed to be the rule for the morning...except for these two ladies that I felt sorry for...they kept asking everyone what they used.
My niece had one take on a mini-jig but she didn't really set the hook, she just started reeling and it came off. That was it for the day for us.
I tried midging but no takers so I just set my rod aside and paid attention to what was going on in the boat (the usual sibling interaction and Q & A that goes on). There was a fly fisherman nearby midging but I didn't see him pick up anything. After I got home I received a fly fishing report that would've helped, but oh, well...he basically said that it was slow, and if you didn't find the magic combo, you didn't even get a hit.
I attached two pics of the one fish...it was hard to get a length on it, but I know for sure she was over 21 inches, and my guesstimate is that she was an eash six pounds, and her tail fins looked good.
I think I'm not buying a park pass this year unless I hit Salt Creek or Aliso more often.

yeah the fishing was S-L-O-W!, only thing worse than a slow day is being outfished by a flimsy Emo like Sean...
I will try and get some more pics up soon...

I wondered where all that algae that floated past us would end up :P
There were weird bubbles in the algae, almost like they were frogs eggs.
