tubing Long Beach???
Okay one of these weekends this summer I am going to want to run up and launch my pontoon on LBH, get out and fish some of those islands that are out there.
My question is where should I launch from, is 72nd street the closest parking to the water or is there another spot to choose from. The pontoon takes about the same number of trips to the water as launching a kayak, one for the boat and one or two for all the tackle, rods etc.

72nd is close to water but has a major dune to try and walk down without carrying 30 yards down the beach. Cherry beach is the easiest and smoothest to launch from and if you catch it early morning, typically tends to be glass conditions. I think Cherry is closer to the islands too

Ummm...so you want to fish the outer waters, inside the breakwater, not the inner harbor/bays (there's two of them)?
Even though you're experienced, and a pontoon boat is better than a float tube, I don't recommend going more than 50 yards away from the sand or rocks. You know that at times a current can pop up, and so can the wind and chop.
The water stays pretty shallow out to the 2nd island/breakwater (I think no more than 50 feet deep if I remember correctly) so if you have a long enough line and anchor you can rest if you have to.
I am aware of people that die or almost die all the time on the water so I try to avoid those situations...and I stay inside harbors and relatively close to shore on large lakes if I'm tubing...I spend quite a bit of time outside the breakwater so I know what it can be like...on Saturday some friends of mine didn't even leave Newport Harbor before they cancelled their trip to San clemente island because the inner harbor waves were going over the bow of their 24 foot Skipjack. If that can happen in the inner harbor...

To me, parking is the thing. Cherry is an easy launch, but you gotta pay. I'd launch by 72nd and park in the neighborhoods. If I had to pay, then Grissom Island.
Someone should make a cart for floattubes so it's an ease to transport.
Let me know what you do, I'd like to join

What about the parking lot below Bixby Park at the end of Junipero Rd.? can I launch from there and what do they charge for parking?
Hows the fishing in Alamitos Bay? looks like I can park and launch for free off of Bayshore and just paddle around Naples...

the parking lot below bixby at the end of Junipero is what we're considering "Cherry Beach", and that's where we consider it to be the easiest. If you want to fish the bay side, there's a small beach right next to a sailing school on the corner of Ocean and 54th street with a strip of parking right in front of the beach. A lot of people use that as access to a launching point. They even have a rack there for putting your kayak on to wash it down with a hose. That's where we launched the 'yaks from when BeachBear and I went

If I remember correctly they take quarters...I used to eat at Park Pantry all the time...in one corner of the park. I'm not sure what time they open the barrier...if you're going for a late afternoon session I think they don't charge after a certain time...It's been awhile since I've been there. It's nicer than it used to be, cruising clubs occasionally gather there.

LOL I still have the LB City boat cards from their sailing school. If I remember correctly there's some free parking but bring quarters...it's been about ten years.

Cherry Beach doesn't charge before 8am and they dont charge after 6pm. There is free parking on the outside part of the curb at the sailing school launch place(Ocean and 54th)
