Turner's pulls WON from shelves!

"Turner's Outdoorsman" has pulled "Western Outdoor News" from its shelves and will no longer be advertising with the newpaper because "WON" has begun running adds for "Bass Pro Shops".
This seems to me like a very stupid thing for them to do as the last time I looked "Bass Pro Shops" did not have any outlets any closer to SoCal than Las Vegas. There are a lot of anglers and hunters in the SoCal area and "Turner's" is still the best local bet for getting set up with what you need.
I know that "Bass Pro Shops" has a website and I have used it quite a bit, in fact I used it to buy my new breathable waders and a new pack rod for trout fishing but I did give "Turner's" the first, second and third shot before I went on line to get it(I also tried "Sport Chalet"). Not everyone has internet access or is willing to buy a rod over the net without holding it in their hand first, if I had not alllready had a Bass Pro Shops Micro Lite there is no way I would have taken the chance getting one over the net.
My question is why would "Turner's" decide to throw a fit like this when their only real local compeditors are the small independent guys.

If you knew the management over there like I do you would see this is a normal move for them. Though half of a WON's sales are through Turners... IT is really dumb on both of their parts... Yes they advertise Bass Pro Shops, but I mean come on, who doesnt know about them. Turners will be in BIG trouble if that Long Beach BPS ever comes a knocking. When was the last updated Turners store? Or for that matter new store? Stanton, that was a converted sizzler into a bank than into a Turners, yes I worked that one too from time to time. I tried to give them ideas way back when but I was just some punk working the tackle counter... Ah well...

They'll soon realize their mistake. Sportfishing industry reminds soooo much of the music business. And since I technically have a career in both industries, I feel like a child in pre-school sometimes

A receint followup to this story the new owners of Turner's have started advertising in WON again and in an article printed in WON last week they are talking about expanding the size of every one of their stores... to try and keep their customers from going to Bass Pro Shops I guess.

It'll be interesting to see just how far Turner's goes after BPS opens in Rancho Cucamonga.

Turners is relocating their Chino location to the chino spectrum... So I think they are trying to get a foot hold as best as they can. Turners sells more localized equipment more so than BPS, though their hunting department is in for a big shock.

I work for turners and their future stores are going to be much larger. They are going to be a minimum of 10,000 square feet and are going to carry a lot more gear than the stores do now. BPS isnt going to affect the stores as much as you think. Honestly, how many people are going to drive from Orange, Fountain Valley and places like that to Rancho Cucamonga just to buy some hunting and fishing stuff. We will still keep a lot of the people that live close to the stores. Also, BPS I dont believe carries all that much big game fishing gear anyway so it shouldnt affect fishing much.

BPS is going to kill Chino, San Bernardino, and Riverside Stores. As far as people coming from far away, people come from victorville to go to the longfin, and hell how many people here went to vegas just to see BPS *raises hand* You may not drive that length but people around here, including myself, would drive that far. It will put a big crimp on Turners, they will need to lower their prices on the things that BPS sells, which is there big money makers like quantum and zebco lol Just because turners will sell red and purple newells doesnt mean that they can compete with BPS

The BPS that's near my house carries a lot of big game stuff and draws people from all over. BPS is a different kind of store. It's more than just a tackle shop, it's a fun place to hang out. They have huge aquariums, tvs playing fishing videos, classes on different fishing and hunting techniques, not to mention a huge variety of items that even a 10,000 sq foot Turners wouldn't be able to match.

After shopping at both BPS and Turners a lot, I can definitely say I would go to BPS over Turners any day. In my case, I would split my time between BPS and local tackle shops and probably not visit Turners much anymore.

Exactly Turners has been living too high on the hog (our money) for too long and will end up paying the price for it. They use to have seminars, they dont anymore. In fact Fountain valley had a whole room for them and OCCASIONALLY had hunting seminars, but if they had seminars like pacific edge does (that sells out in days) or like BPS does with HUGE crowds it would be different. They have rested on their laurels too long. If they scramble now and redesign their stores, layout, and how they do business they might be saved, but its not going to happen. Turners has buying power that they use, however they still charge more on just about every item they sell... It does you in eventually. The internet and BPS will kill the local shops, which is bad for them, but overall the internet will still provide PLENTY of competition for us to save money.

Definitely the initial intruige of BPS in Cali will have a toll on Turners but I honestly think it will be short lived and Turners won't see to much in terms of repercussions from it....IMO
