Saltwater flyfishing question.

All right peeps. Ive just started flyfishing, so treat me like ive never flyfished before.

Alright, hypethetically, i go fishing in a harbor. Lets make it Dana Point Harbor. I have sinking fly line, which is 6 IPS. Attached to that, i have 5-10 ft of 6lb regular monofilament fishing line. I have a saltwater fly attached to that. Is this a good setup for harbors? What type of flies should i use?? My friend told me that when the fly hits the bottom, i should start stripping my line(taking it in).

ANY additional thoughts would really help, remember, ive just started flyfishing, i basically dont know what im doing lol.

Ok, so you have the fly line, then fishing line, then the fly. What are you fishing for? I am thinking you are better of using the moni then a regular leader. On saltwater and bigger fish I tend to use fishing line or moni. Its stronger for those types of conditions. On flies, it would depend on what you are fishing for. I just usually wait about 30 seconds for it to sink then start stripping. Get a pattern going with your retrieves, so it looks more life like. You can also wait for it to hit the bottom as your friend said. What type and kind of rod are you using?

Im using my GLoomis Rod.

In the harbor, there are croaker, whiteseabass, halibut, barracuda, bass, sculpin, jacksmelt, and mabye a few more species. Now knowing that these fish are in here, what type of flies would u use?
