East Cape

I was planning a trip to East Cape. I've never been there before, but I heard it is one of the best places to go fish'n. I'm not sure where I'm going to stay, I was thinking Pamas de Cortez. Have any of you guys been there or have any input? Is Punta Colorada, Playa del Sol, or Rancho Leonero, better? My trip is planned for Labor Day weekend Sept. 2-5. I know some of you guys had to of been to some of these places. So what do you guys suggest. Is the fishing as good as I've heard?

Thanks, Gene

I'm not sure where the East Cape is... Where is it exactly? I would look on Google if you haven't already.

hey sonic, east cape is an amazing fishing enviroment. i have been going to Hotel Punta Colorada for ten years and have never been dissapointed. their are many varieties of fish. its a very rich enviroment, very full of life. as far as resorts are concerned my personal favorite is Punta Colorada, but if you are taking your kids or your wife then Palmas De Cortez might be the resort for you, it really depends on what you are looking for and who you are trying to please. Palmas De Cortez is a great resort but it is much more elusive then Punta Colorada. both resorts are owned by the same owner and he owns a third resort which is next to Palmas it is called Playa Del Sol, its also a great hotel but is more of a draw to windsurfers. Punta Colorada is my favorite hotel for a number of reasons, it is a hotel for the hardcore fisherman, it is a place where you can REALLY relax, thier is only one tv in the bar and thats it, it has the best beach of any of the resorts and i love it. all the meals are included and the food is really good. i could go on forever about it, i have caught tons of fish in all shapes and sizes and i have yet to get skunked. i usually go in august which is prime fishing time but it is extremely hot. i saw that you were planning on september, for as long as i ahve been going there they colse in september :-( due to hurricanes and what not but rumor has it that they wont close this year, i am going to have to get back to you on that, i doubt it will be open though. as far as fall months all i can is WINDY, the sierra are really on the chew as well as other fish but i re-emphasize its windy. spring produces good numbers in marlin and others and summer is prime time IMHO, i have been there in june, july and august and i think that august was best. god-willing i will go back this year in august. hope all this info helped and if you have any questions send me a pm or im me.

Sonics7,

Along with Andrew(Cuban Fish), I too have quite a bit of experience on the East cape and the Northern Sea of Cortez. Punta is great...never stayed at the resort, but fished around the area (Cuban Fiah has stayed at the resort). Anywhere you fish on the East Cape, you will have a blast. There's not a bad spot to the geographic location. If you're fishing from shore expect Permit, RoosterFish, big Corbina, Sierra(which I didn't know exsisted on the East Cape until Cuban Fish posted his trip down there). I would fish panga boats. You'll be able to get them for cheap and the guides really know their stuff. While fishing pangas you can even go out just a bit further than the inshore and catch Dorado, YFT, Sailfish, Wahoo, etc. It's one of the few locations where Pelagic species come in really close to the inshore.

I've only fished the area around Cabo San Lucas, and I stayed in Cabo, so I can't speak with any authority on the East Cape, or their hospitalities.

I have been planning a return to the region, and some friendly people I met at the recent FHS have me seriously considering Rancho Buena Vista. If you're interested in their accomodations, PM me.

Tunakid is dead-on right, too. You'll be there in prime-time. You may have the trip of your lifetime

Thanks guys for all the info. I'm going with my girlfriend so like Cuban fish and gottago said, I'm gonna stay at Palmas de Cortez. I booked 4 nights Sept.2-6, I got a suite, 2 days on a deluxe cruiser, 3 meals a day, transportation to the resort and back, for $1839. Does that sound about right? Tony what kind of gear should I bring if I wanted to fish from shore, rods, reals, lures, # test, I don't know what to expect?

Thanks guys

Gene

Gene,

A good surf rod like Andrew(Cuban Fish) said. Problem with this statement is people have different ideas of what a surf rod would be. I'll leave it like this:

From Shore:
Rod: anywhere from a 7 1/2 to 9 foot rod (Spinning); my preference would be an 8 foot spinning rod (10 - 20 test lb rating) with a solid backbone and a soft tip (i.e. Hastings rods, ARC, Sabre).

Reel: Any good 20 - 30 pound rated spinning reel (Quantum Cabo PT60, Quantum Boca PT bsp60; Penn 6500SS or 7500SS; Diawa Emcast ECP4500). I would do 50% spectra backing and 50% top shot of 15#(minimum) 20#(maximum) blue P-Line mono

Lures: You could definitely cast light irons from shore into the surf for Roosterfish, Medium large Rapala crankbaits (Mackerel patterns -blue or green or silver<mirror>), Large Swimbaits(Storm; Big Hammer; Bear Paws) with 1 - 2oz bullet, ball or shad headed jigs, or Large plastic grubs fished the same way; even top water plugs (G-Plug Lures); or Large "Krocodiles" spoons (blue or green mackerel patterns or chrome/prism)

That's my suggestions. Fish with the same set up from a panga as you would from shore, but I'd move to conventional gear on the panga.
