Can someone explain

the ground fishing regulations to me? Do we have closed seasons here in California? If so, what do the party boats fish for? I can't seem to get any updated info.

thanks.

99% of the time you wont have to worry about closed seasons.

The Sierras are closed from November to April.
Rockfishing has some weird rules (only concerns you if you're a boatowner)
Lobster are only in season during the winter (Oct to March i think.)

Other than that, you can fish for whatever you want. No need for a license if you're fishing from a pier, or a jetty. However, you'll need a fishing license to fish anywhere else.

Check out this link -

California Department of Fish & Game, Marine Region

That should provide any info you're looking for. There are constant changes in the depth you can fish, size of the fish, number of fish you can keep, and even fish that are legal to keep.

The good news is that there's always something to fish for. The party boats usually do really well on rockfish in the winter.
