Three men enjoying the ocean view at Point Mugu were swept to their deaths this afternoon by a large wave that pulled them into the water along with two companions who were able to scramble to safety, authorities said.
The victims -- ages 17, 19 and 21 -- were standing on the landmark Mugu Rock about 1:50 p.m. when the wave knocked them into the surf, said Ventura County Sheriff's Capt. Bruce Norris.
Sheriff's officials arrived at the site within nine minutes and used a helicopter to search for the men but were unable to save them, Norris said. Authorities recovered all three bodies from the ocean.
The area, a popular destination for fishing, climbing and sightseeing, has long been known for its danger as well as its beauty. Earlier this year, high waves swept a 16-year-old boy off the rock as he was fishing with relatives.
"It's not infrequent, especially down in that area," Norris said.
Norris said authorities believe the victims were all local men. Their names were not immediately released. The two survivors, Norris said, were 17 and 27.
