The term "lurker" is taken by some as a derogatory remark of someone who is a non-poster or an inactive member.
I am an open-minded person and do understand time constraints and/or language barriers may discourage a person from posting.
To those who view this board daily but do not post, here are some things to consider:
- Message boards such as HUSF become more valuable with the increase of participating members.
- If you possess useful information (not limited to fishing knowledge), by sharing this information you become a "giver." There is much satisfaction that is accompanied with sharing information. Why do you think school teachers educate students? For money? Highly unlikely. Educators teach because they gain a sense of fulfillment by teaching others. This is a great feeling!
- If you feel you are too much of a rookie to get involved, you are not alone. We were all rookies one day. By getting active, you will be able to fish with fellow members and speed up the learning curve. How great is that?!
- Many us post on other sites. Some feel it is their obligation to be loyal to one site. This is so far from the truth. What do you get out of being loyal to a single site and lurking on others? Not much if you ask me. We come from all walks of life/sites and will come across information that can tremendously help another member. If you are silent, you are not helping. I am not encouraging you to copy and paste articles from other sites (especially mine, lol). What I suggest is if you learned something such as a tip and feel this tip can be used by a member of this site or another site, please be vocal about it.
- There are 9+ thousand members on this site and only a fraction of the members are active. You obviously come to this site daily or weekly because the information you find is useful and/or interesting. Imagine how MUCH BETTER this site would be if you and others would get active.
- Personal issues with certain people? I know this far too well. I too have (past tense) had my share of run-ins with members from this and other sites. We are all human and can't always agree on everything. From my experience, the people I've had problems with online ALL turned out to be incredibly nice people when faced in person. If you have a problem with me or anyone else, sooner than later things will be forgotten and friendships will be built.
- Are you dying to find out where someone caught their fish or what they used to catch it? Kinda timid to ask because you have 0 or only a few posts? Well, if you were active, this would not be a problem. I personally do not give detailed information to those who PM and have 0 or only a few posts. I look at the person's profile and if they were a long time registered user with a few posts, that to me tells me they do not deserve any information and frankly, what is the point of giving detailed information to those who are complete strangers and continue to remain anonymous? I am a very generous person but I and others do draw a line at some point. Be active, and this "line" will be removed. It is all up to you.
- If you have read this far, you obviously have enough time to post.
We look forward to interacting with you.
