Salmon Closure 2008 Fresh & Salt

A friend called me to tell me that Salmon season is closed, basically for Ocean, and River fishing for 2008.

I believe there is a section up near Red Bluff where you are allowed to keep ONE salmon total, and the DFG checks constantly...but most people don't even know where Red Bluff is. (believe it or not, I know people up there, and I got my first salmon goose-egg there)

The general cause is the drought from last year...it caused fewer reproducing salmon...pretty much the predicted salmon return is about 1/3rd of what is needed to keep the salmon population from shrinking permanently.

here is a link to DFG info:

and here is one of the rulings, in case you can't see the link:

"May 9, 2008
The Commission adopted Option 4 for a zero bag limit in all 14 originally proposed rivers and streams except for a one-salmon bag limit in the Sacramento River from Red Bluff Diversion Dam to Knights Landing from November 1 to December 31.

The Department proposed and recommended this option at the Commission’s May meeting, which is a hybrid of the originally proposed Options 2 and 3, because of concerns about impacts to Spring Chinook. This option will provide maximum protection to Sacramento River Fall Chinook in the Central Valley while providing very limited access to late-fall Chinook.

The effective date of the regulatory package should be on or before July 15."

and here is the ocean part:
"April 18, 2008
The California Fish and Game Commission voted unanimously to prohibit commercial and recreational salmon fishing in state ocean waters, which extend three miles off the coast.

The federal ban approved last week by the Pacific Fishery Management Council applies to U.S. waters extending from three to 200 miles off the coasts of California and Oregon.

The Commission took the unprecedented action because runs of fall-run Sacramento chinook salmon are experiencing a sharp decline. "

A friend was telling me that the nearest "real" salmon fishing river is 18 hrs drive away vs the 8 hrs to Sacramento

Yah I was up in Monterey and spoke with a tackle shop owner who told me the news on the day it was announced. Talk about being at the wonrg place at the wrong time. The industry is hurting and we can hope the charter boats survive till albacore season opens.

i think all of this fuss is bs. i have already toltaled my salmon catch of last year of which i drug salmon gear on two flashers about 10 times, i hooked a 20lb plus salmon last weekend out of port san luis on a two ounce bullet jig head with a 6" grub i was using for ling cod. At the time i was marking other fish all over the water collum. I know the fish counts where down last year, but i think they made too big a fuss about this years season. I also saw way too many sea lions.

When was the last time anyone saw a sea lion eating a salmon? Seriously. Don't give the BS story about "this one guy i know...." or "a friend of a friend of mine...." or any crap like that. Just when YOU saw it. I know I'm going to get flamed for this but oh well.

I saw it on a TV special , it showed sea lions 100 miles up rivers at the foot of dams, at the fish ladders eating salmon as they were stacked up waiting there turn to go up.

Last I heard, there was only one species of seal/sea lion that went into freshwater and they are on a different continent.
