a big case of "WTF"?!?!?

While I was getting ready for work tonight I heard a "hissing" and a "popping" noise coming from near my dresser. At first I thought that it was a can of "Air Duster" or a can of deodorant as it sounded like pressurized air leaking but soon I started to smell plastic burning.
I traced the noise and smell to a small lint shaver that was hot to the touch and I could see it melting!
I used a knife to pop off the battery cover and saw that the "AA" alkaline battery inside of it was the source of the heat and noise. It was warped out of shape and was to hot to hold in the palm of your hand and was still making popping and hissing noises.
This battery was not that old and the lint shaver had not been used since last week sometime, it was not exposed to any outside heat sources or any kind of liquid and there did not appear to be any corrosion on any part of the battery or shaver.

has anybody ever experienced this before?

Remember to remove any batteries from any electronic device if you don't plan to use it frequently!!

Wow this is something we all probly wouldn't think would happen. Lucky you had the chance to fix the small problem before it became a BIG one.

What brand of battery was it? I've seen one rupture in my bud's hand and send acid all over his arm and shirt.

Yeah it happens sometimes batteries have been known to randomly explode, there were a few cases of cell phone batteries going off on people so they had a recall. You were lucky it didn't go off when you were holding it or opening it up. I had a rechargeable pack of RC Car batteries go off on me, all 6 cells blew up one at a time and threw crap everywhere. Had to wipe all the acid off with a water and baking powder mixture.
