shark at newport pier
My buddies called me up on wenesday night at about 10pm to see if I can meet them up at the pier. By the time I got off work and to the pier, it was close. Mike showed my a shark that he hooked. This was not a smooth hound, it nad real teeth. He told me that the pier was cover with these sharks. People were hooking these as if they were mackels. Most of them broke off becuase of the long hual up. The shark had a spike in front of the dorsal fin. I am clueless to what type of shark this was. What is it? We went the next day and had nada.

Pix would help identify it.
That's crazy though. Would be interested in knowing what attracted the sharks.

Except for the teeth, it sounds like a horn shark.

Most likely a Spiney dogfish aka pinback, or horn shark. Both have "spikes" on the front egde of thier fins.

Yeah, Dogfish travel in packs (just like wild dogs) so when you catch one, chances are really good others will too.
