Central Coast Fish Report

Fishing report

PACIFIC OCEAN
Captain Robert Gallia of the El Dorado had 12 anglers catching 17 salmon up to 20
pounds fishing about 10 miles southwest of Half Moon Bay in 300 feet of water. The
sea lions (cling-ons) are getting their fair share as well. The action has been good
with anglers catching early limits as the salmon were feeding on krill and sardines.
The fish have ranged between 15 and 25 pounds. The salmon appear to be attracted to
Chrome Flashers.
THE BAYS
SUISUN: Jordona Santiago of Martinez Bait and Tackle reported good fishing this week
with a lot of sturgeon and a few striper showing up. Anglers have been using ghost
and grass shrimp for the sturgeon and anchovies for the striper. Depths on the
sturgeon varied but were mainly at 40 feet. The hot spots varied as well, from the
mouth of the Montezuma Slough through the Mothball Fleet and the green can (green
buoy at Ozol pier). John Riccobuono of Martinez caught two stripers at the Martinez
Pier totaling 47 inches using anchovies and Erik Crouch of Martinez caught a 25-inch
striper at the pier as well using anchovies.
Catching sturgeon this week were Troy Holt of Vacaville (70.75 inches, 67.8 pounds)
at the green barn using an eel/grass shrimp combo, Eric Hicks of Hercules (65.25
inches, 58 pounds) at the green barn using the same bait and Wes Lancaster of
Benicia (48 inches, 21 pounds) at the mouth of the Montezuma Slough on roe. Others
included Alex Borja of El Sobrante (61.5 inches, 56.6 pounds) at the first row of
ships (from the West) on a pile worms/ghost and grass shrimp combo, Ben Mechling of
Martinez (51 inches, 27.7 pounds) sturgeon at the Iowa on a grass/ghost combo, Art
Alfinito of Medford, Ore. (63 inches, 47.2 pounds) at the first row on ghost shrimp,
Troy Belew of Concord (66 inches, 74.3 pounds) at the green can on grass shrimp,
Curtis Shiffer of Hayward (48 inches, 25.3 pounds) at the second row on grass
shrimp, Jeff Luque of Hayward (63 inches, 54.9 pounds) at the same place with grass
shrimp and Bob Murbach of Pleasant Hill at the shell dock (93.5 pounds, 71.75
inches) on grass shrimp.
Tony Lopez of McAvoy's Bait in Pittsburg said that despite the wind, anglers have
been having success at Middle Ground, Firing Line and Big Cut for both sturgeon and
stripers. The incoming tides have been good and should remain so for this weekend.
Catching sturgeon were Steve and Thomas Landucci (70 pounds) on ghost shrimp at
Little Cut, George Reitz (65 pounds, 63 inches) at Middle Ground, Wayne Gailey (57
inches, 57 pounds) at the Firing Line on grass shrimp and Don Partney caught two
68-pounders totaling 139 inches at Middle Ground. Catching stripers were Leonard
Tourville (20 and 10 pounds) at Middle Ground on bullhead, Isaac Everhart (two
10-pounders) at the Pittsburg Marina and Joe Massey caught a 20-pounder on ghost
shrimp at Middle Ground.
