San Francisco Area Freshwater Reports 10/20/06
Rivers: Meanwhile, on the Klamath, the salmon keep shouldering their way
in. Local guide Harvey Young swears the run will slow soon. So for now,
he's catching what he can. Out Tuesday, his group landed 14 fish, some
adult salmon, some jacks and some steelhead. They kept what they legally
could, gently released the rest. To the north, at the Smith, the point
of the fall run is milling at the mouth, just waiting on the next good
shot of rain to move in. The Chetco has salmon in it already, but the
low, clear conditions make for tough fishing. ... Bob Sparre was out
night fishing on the American on Wednesday. In the first hour, he saw
and heard more salmon rolling and splashing than he has over all his
trips the past three weeks combined. So, it would seem there are fish
moving into the river. To prove the point, his client promptly lost a
salmon at the boat -- the point being not that he farmed a fish, but
rather that he lost an actual salmon, and such a rare, rare thing.
Local trout plantings: The state and local powers have deemed it time to
stock the lakes and reservoirs with trout, so here come the hatchery
trucks. The cooler nights have brought the trout up, and this is an
ideal time to fish. This week, the truck chutes dipped into ... Contra
Loma Reservoir (Antioch), with 3,500 pounds of rainbow trout. Lake
Chabot (Castro Valley), 750 pounds. Horseshoe Lake at Quarry Lakes
Regional Park (Union City-Fremont), 1,750 pounds. Shadow Cliffs
(Pleasanton), 1,000 pounds. Lake Del Valle (Livermore), 3,000 pounds.
Also on the list were Marin's Bon Tempe Lake and our own Lake Merced
North.
