Flew down to Cabo San Lucas with a bunch of friends for our great buddy's bachelor party. Saturday, June 16th we hopped on a boat to go find some marlin.
Embarked from Cabo on the Dreammaker with Captain Ron. This guy was great-- seriously really awesome -- there is no clock-watching or anything like that. He had a true passion for hooking up fish (he's retired too). I would personally recommend him to anyone fishing out of the Cabo Marina.
Saw 2 Whale Sharks (one caused a quick left turn to avoid), 2 Manta Rays, and hundreds of porpoises as we headed 50 miles up the Sea of Cortez.
Throughout the morning we had 2 teaser Marlin hookups that got away. Finally after a couple of hours of fishing we got one. After about 45 minutes we landed it - we traded the pole between the 4 of us so we can all have some fun. Unfortunately, the Striped Marlin was hooked deep down in the stomach so it had to be a keeper - went to the deckhand's family. The boat is most often a C & R boat (which is cool) so we would have released it if circumstances were different.
Shorty after we ran into a large school of tuna chasing bait fish - a pod of 30+ porpoises was chasing the whole thing. Captain said this was the first time in 2 years he's seen YFT in the Sea of Cortez. We got ready for some action and next thing we knew we were catching Yellow Fin Tuna left and right. We had sushi (sushimi?) strips within 10 minutes of landing them. We also ate dinner in Cabo with Captain Ron, had the Tuna cooked 7 different ways, and all I can say is WOW.
The color of the blue stripes of the Marlin is amazing - also quite crazy to see the color of the fish (bright blues) disappear when it expires. A beautiful fish caught on a beautiful piece of water. Awesome trip - enjoy the pics.
p.s. I also happened to go surf fishing for the 1st time today - 1st time since last October - my broken leg and ankle have healed nicely and I'm glad to be back on the water
