Tony, I use mainly spinning equipment. I've got in addition to the Stradic some heavy reels that can hold about 200 yds of 20 lb test. Do you think that will be enough? I've got a ambassadeur 6500 that can hold about that same amount of line. If we are going to get into some big fish then i'm thinking 200 yds won't be enough. For the surf i've got light action spinning outfits. What are we targetting in the surf?

I'm not exactly sure what we are going for, but around here 200 yards should be enough. If we are going for bigger fish, then I would reccomend putting spectra backing on your reel with a topshot of mono. This way you'll have much more line capacity.

Matt, that sucks dude. Sorry to hear this happened. Some people are just lost in life and act accordingly. Well the trip wouldn't be for 2 -3 months; maybe that's 'nuff time to save up some cash for the trip or maybe some of us can help out.

O.k. So aside from talking about buying gear, what does everyone think of doing this trip?

Crap! that's right school for some people. Well it would only be missing school on Monday, becasue we'd be taking off from Cali late friday evening. Would that be cool?

Sean, going down as far as San Quintin; and considering both shore fishing and Panga boat, these are the more common species you'd see:
Panga:
Sailfish ( I don't think 200yrds would be wise for the average angler)
Dorado
Grouper
Red Snapper
YT's
WSB's
Pacific Whitefish
Calico Bass
Halibut
Shore:
Corbina (nice size one's too)
Sierra
ROOSTERFISH!!!!
Halibut
BSP
and a lotta Smoothhound sharks and bat rays
Will we see all of these species?... ya never know, but they're all available down there.

You're gonna need to bring at least two different rigs; for Panga fishing and maybe an addtional lighter spinning rig to use from shore ( Corbina, Barred Surf Perch, Sierra).
A 15 -20lb rig is standard and good, but I would bring something a bit heavier like something between a 30# - 50# rig because sometimes the Pangas will troll for Sailfish if we request, and if you're gonna be on my Panga, I'm gonna request it!!

Well, It is notorious for being somewhat of a corrupt legal system and you never know what could go on; a tourist has to be very careful in their travels, especially in Baja. Once you're situated where you are then it's normally pretty safe. It's the traveling that most people are leary of. Bottom line, can't trust the cops down there at all. Extortion is a very popular past time down there. Not trying to scare you but it happens....not to everyone, but it happens. That's probably what your dad is worried about.
Ironically Mexico is one of the most beautiful places on the face of our planet, a seriously and incredibly beautiful country. And the women, oh my God, the women are so incredible, and the funny thing is most of them are totally oblivious to how fine their ### really is, they just don't know.
Sean, The only problem that I can see your dad as well as myself or any other responsible person over 18yrs old would have is the legal responsibility factor; mainly medical. If some medical emergency were to happen (praise God it won't), then I don't know the legalities of who's responsible for that, etc. etc. Your dad would have to sign a letter saying he assumes all responsibility and give us permission to make medical decissions.
