CABO trip!! 22-26
Sorry about the late report. I was having some computer troubles.
First night out, got pretty wasted at Squid Roe and Cabo Wabo.
Day 2: We barely get up for the boat. Stared out trolling mauraders for wahoo, nada. We get to the tuna spot and hook up on 4 football YFT. Then while everyone was a sleep. We started trolling for marlin. We hookup and my friend reels in a marlin. I don't know how it goes but I think it should of been mine since I didn't sleep at all. Anyways, after a nice fight he gets a 140# stripe. Even though the day sucked, we got the high count fo the fleet.
Day 2 Since our capt and deck hand are complete idiot we troll out to the tuna spot again. An 1 1/2hrs later we get there only to see Everyone leaving. We try for a little bit for nada. So our capt decides to troll for marlin again. on the way out, our capt. tells us to drop some iron. Instantly I hookup, Fights like a big wet blanket. Get him to the boat Giant squid 50#er. So basically we caught a boat load of these and went home.
Day 3: That night I chunked a whole cooler full of squid and took it out the next day. First boat out, hook up instanly 25-30#ers. Ended up with 10 YFT and 1 mahi.
All in all a pretty good trip. I wish the capt and deck hand listened to us alittle more. As a suggestion never take a cruiser out of Gordo Banks Pangas. The pangas a fine , but "DO NOT TAKE THE CRUISERS." They suck a$$.

Thanks for the report, unfortunately the captains can be like that sometimes. The reason being is that it is easier on them to go troll for marlin and there is a good chance you will find one. They have a mentality that everyone likes fishing for marlin.
What lure did you guys catch the marlin on and were you guys mainly fishing the tuna with bait?

Marlin was caught on a dead bonito. For tuna all was caught on chunk squid we caught. I tried feathers, surface Iron, yoyo, swim baits, jerkbaits, pretty much everything.

Hey Gene,
I BBQed the Marlin saturaday and it actually tasted pretty good, I've always heard it taste like poopoo. I put olive oil all over it and some spices and cooked it under medium flame for awhile.

Marlin is not that bad eating. But i strongly reccomend you release them, i know i do. And if you happened to end up with one they are very tasty when smoked.
But sailfish on the other hand are rather poor table fare.

I'm yet to catch any billfish, this is my friends second. his first was a sail that was released. The capts on those boats are pretty quick to the gaff. The marlin was belly hooked so he decided to keep it. I told him if he released it it might have a chance and if he kept it it had no chance. but since it was his first he wanted to keep it.

thats the only thing about fishing down there, the captains are almost always pretty quick for the gaff. They are just hungry and a marlin has plenty of meat. Alot of the captains i talk to said that they LOVE eating marlin, they say they prefer it over fish like wahoo and dorado. Maybe its just personal preference but it seems to be a reocurring theme.

The only thing about the Marlin, like any big fillet of fish you get, you have to cut out that dark red strip of flesh, its icky.
