The Weather/Fishing is Hot

I will leave a brief report now and I will give a detailed one when I get back into the states.

After arrival to Puerto Escondido I decided to try a little inshore fishing which up until now I have done very little. I grabbed a spinning setup and hit an area of the bay which has a mangrove area. My pops already had a Wax Wing jig set up on this reel so I toss it at boiling swirls and bait fish jumping all over the place. After about 10 casts without a strike I switch out to a plastic swim bait and on my third cast a small rooster fish in the 8-10lb range charges bait right toward me and when I say right toward me I mean this fish almost swam between my legs, within about 1 foot as I stand in knee deep water. My lure was about 5 feet in front of me just about ready to be picked up and recast and this chicken little jumps all over it. Its game on and this sucker puts up a great fight, with line ripping action. Being a worthy opponent the mighty but mini Pez Gallo won its release from the end if a pair of needle nose pliers I carry. Man I'm psyched and replace the tore up plastic. On around my fifth cast this time I'm picked up by a snook. This fish jumps with violent head shaking action 4 or 5 times and spits the lure. Well after that the wind had shifted from coming out of the south to the north and the bite shut down. Man what a great half hour of fishing it was.

The next day we take the boat out and have a epic, most unbelievable day of fishing. My father has lived here for 10 years and fished the area before that and has never seen a day like this. I have to rest my sore arms, you see even typing is to tough right now. Ha ha

More to come later, buenos dias

My pops place is 17 miles south of Loreto in Baja and the airport was packed with locals as you can see.

Really this is almost inside of his kitchen as most of the people down here cook in a part of the house that is not air conditioned, rather opting to cook in a more open air environment.

The first day of "True" fishing brought us a sunrise like no other I have seen down here.

Sorry but this image does not do justice on how truly beautiful this sunrise was. I know they say a picture in worth a thousand words but this one seems to be missing about 600 of them.

Glad to see you're having better luck than I did further south...water was a dirty green...I hate the G20 Summit! (it closed down Puerto Cabo, and put a nail in the coffin of my fishing trip)...once again, glad you had a good time

I'll start my pics with some LBF (land based fishing). You see we were to be out in the boat today but the weather report called for wind so we made the choice not to run offshore.

This pic is of me the other day at the mangroves in Puerto Escondido. A guy I have never met launched his kayak in the same area I was fishing and snapped these pictures and said he would e-mail them to me, and guess what? He did.

These next pics are of today. I decided to do a morning session in the bay just north of Puerto Escondido. I fired up one of the quads and off I went.

After hiking down to the point you see on the right I fished a little with plastics and was met by this guy.

A couple of cast later here comes another Cabrea.

It took me longer to hike down to the water than the time I spent fishing. I'm totally convinced if you throw a hooked line in the water down here your going to catch something.

Well I have to go help a guy across the street with his brand new boat and what a beauty she is. This is the last boat Harold Davis will build and it is truly one of a kind,

I will post some more of our offshore adventures when I have more time.
Buenos Tar des

Our first day off shore started with us leaving Puerto Escondido at about 5:30 am and running to Loreto to pick up 2 people that will be fishing with us. We picked up the guys, iced up, bought bait and headed out at around 6:45. We run for about another 45 minutes to start looking in a area about 7-10 miles north of Carmen island. We spot small patties in the area and pull up to one about the size the size of a trash can lid with a single bird sitting on it. We throw a single bait on it and in a few minutes we're picked up by the right kind. As I get the fish close to the boat the first time I see a follower with the hooked fish so my dad throws out a bait and he is bit in seconds. So as we fight out fish I look down in the water and see around 100 dorado swimming just below the surface. Two more baits are thrown out and it is hookups all around the boat.

These are all quality fish and we are having a blast.

We call in others and in short order we 8 other boats fishing this bite.

We keep 6 dorado and release 8-10 quality dorado in the 25-35lb range, all before 8:30. Our largest dorado went 40lbs caught by my pops. So we start to think what do we do next? Yep, you may have guessed it, it is time to go and play with the billfish. We left two fish short of our limit on dorado because sometimes the BIG bulls will be with the billfish because their not afraid of being eaten because of their size.

We start to head further north east and it is not long before we see birds working. As we pull up to the first set of birds we see 5 or 6 billfish puddleing around chasing bait. We hook 2 sailfish and battle those for a well deserved release. We then fire up the boat and run maybe 100 or so yards to the next group of birds. It's the same thing 4-5 billfish. All in all we released around 10-12 billfish which was a mixture of sails and stripes. We pulled on fish until we could pull no more. All of my fish were caught on 40lb test with 50lb fluorocarbon used for its abrasion resistance and not because of line shy fish.

Sorry for no pics of the billfish as one of the other guys fishing with my father and I shot all the pics on his camera and has not e-mailed them to me yet. If I get some good ones I will add them.

My father has lived in Puerto Escondido for 10 years and fished the area for years before that and has never seen or heard of anyone having a day like we had. All of this and we are headed back to dock at 11:00.

Well the tourney starts tomorrow and it will be two hard days of fishing. Wish us luck.
Team Pacifico out.

Its All Over

Well the tourney is over and there was no love for Team Pacifico this year. We did catch plenty of fish just not the ones that would of placed us on the leader board. We found good dorado

and billfish but these don't count in the tourney.

A good time was had by all, though we only had 30 teams this year which is around 10 less than the last couple of years. Making this the second biggest tournament in the Loreto area, only Fishing For The Mission is larger, usually around 60 teams enter that event.

Shimano stepped up big again and donated gear worth over $9,000 to be raffled off. All the proceeds go to local charities as well as most of the fish caught during the event. Shimano really gets no advertisement other than at the event and I don't think the Mexican charities qualify for U.S. tax write offs. My hats off to those guys for paying back to such a good cause.

I already can't wait until next year. I may have to do a October run down to Loreto to get my Mexican fishing fix in.

Team Pacifico out
