Fricken Mongolia Man!!! - California Fishing

I just got back from a business trip to S. Korea. I knew I'd have a few extra days to kill, so before I left, I booked a trip with a Korean associate of mine to fish the Hovsgol region of Mongolia. I was there for Three days and I fished Two days. We fished for "Grayling", and two very exotic species: "Taimen" and "Lenok Trout". I caught all three species on two standard type Salmon spinning rigs (one rigged to fish artificial lures and one rigged to fish deer hair Bass flies. Taimens are very large Salmonids (a variation of the salmon family) It looks like a cross between a King Salmon, a Tarpon, and an Arrowana, and they're HUGE and put up a fight like a Yellowtail if not worse!!

I landed 8 over the two days of fishing with my Largest being 41.4 pounds (landed on a Dick Nite chrome and brass spoon), and the second to the largest, a 33.5 pound Taimen (landed on a Caledon Flies "Water Dog" bass fly). If you have a chance to go on-line and search "Fishing Mongolia" or search "Taimen" or "Lenok Trout", check it out! Didn't have a digital camera only 35mm film. Soon as they're developed. I'll scan and post!!

Oh man! I thought those trout they stock at Corona and SARL sounded freakish, an arrowana, tarpon, and king salmon put together sounds ferocious! I cannot wait for the pictures.

They actually are harmless to humans of course, but their natural diet is anything from other fish, to these large toads they have there; but their main target for consumption are these medium size rodents(I forget what they're called), they're about the size of a medium size Guinea Pig. Wild huh? The Lenok Trout are a great catch also.

Cuban Fish,

The water was cold even though thte weather was nice!!!!!!!! I waded hip deep with waders that were neopreme lined, but fished mostly dry from shore.

Now that is a fishing report we don't see to offen.. once saw a fishing show that was taped in that area of the world...Can't wait to see the pics.

Nice report!!I searched on yahoo some of those fish,they look like browns!That must ahev been a blast!!!!!!!

Yeah, it was quite an experience. I think the best part was fishing for a species; actually two species that we just don't talk or read about here in this part of the world very often, if at all. My next extreme sport fishing expidition will be plans to go and fish the Adriatic River system from either Austria to Slovania; Eastern Italy to Albania; the ONLY small region IN THE WORLD that hosts the endangered "Marble Trout". these things are about the size of big Browns or medium size Steelhead. They're gorgeous, and obviously being endangered, catch and release only / barbless hook. Do a "search" for "Marble Trout"....check 'em out.

Well, when they are smaller they do kind of resemble a big brown trout, just more rosey/redish in color. As they get older and much bigger(they can live up to 25-30 years), their body fills out more and they get a alot more silver in color and kinda scaley like an Arrowana, common sizes are 20-35 lbs. My big one was in the 40-45 lb range, but I saw a lady land one over 60lbs. on fly rod. It's weird, juviniles and adults resemblance is like "night and day".

I have read about these things, they eat Lemmings man! I am so jelous!

lets start tying some lemming imitating flys! lol. it would be so cool to flyline a lemming though.

Why don't we just find some stuffed animals that look like Lemmings, insert about 2-3 oz's of weight in them, Texas rig 'em and ...............walla!!!!

because fresh dead lemmings are easy to get. lemmings reproduce so much that they knock eachother off cliffs (because there isnt enogh room)!
