To catch a HOG!
Deep , live bait if available, slow or no movement presentation. If trolling, large lures, at least 10" long, trolling slow, not over 3mph. and within 6 ft of the bottom in 30 ft. or deeper of water. If live bait, BIG at least 1 pound, no movement, deep (start at 30ft than deeper) dropper loop Carolina Style close to some sort of structure.
The WHY of the above. Trophy fish are old, wise, do not need much food to survive, are relitively slow because of size and old age, the majority of the food eaten by them is most likely dead. Or almost dead. Large baits, because if you are 30lbs a 4oz sardine will not get it. Use a 2 lb carp. The old ones want to spend the minimum amount of energy for the maximum amount of food.
Deep water is the sanctuary of large predators, find the deepest water in the area of the lake you are fishing and the lunkers will be close to it.
The most important skill of all : Patience, if you get one good hit in 8 hours , you have done well.
