lip holding a bass doesn't force its mouth wide open more than it can naturally. unless of course a person is really man handling it. i just use light pressure and try not to bend my hand so i don't bend its jaw. anything of size, my hand goes under its belly.

I'm pretty good about handling them carefully. I'm sure one or two might have accidentally got torqued but, for the most part, I'm holding them vertically and not horizontally.

The best release is IF you can keep them in the water, but most of us shore guys don't have that option..Lip em, snap a pic and get em back in asap..btw, Do not oxygenate them by moving them backwards..can harm their gills. And Please, don't horse them in, then let the fish flop on the ground, that can remove their slime coat, which is their first line of defense against parisites..and yes, you can keep em lipped and still snap a pic..

I know, I say that alot, maybe this time...someone is listening..

I mostly hold bass horizontally but have my hand under supporting the weight instead of all the weight on the jaw...

Release them gently into the cooler, so you don't bruise the meat. Don't try to tenderize them by playing soccer with them like Dodo.
