fly fishing..without a flyfishing rod

hey everyone

Lately I've been fishing using little flies that are designed for a flyfishing rod but I've been using a spinner rod (I think that's what it's called). I've just been catching some bluegill and bass and I find it to be pretty fun. I was just wondering if this is common at all to fish flies without an actual flyfishing rod? Because I get alot of people laughing at me and I hear some comments but if I'm catching fish then who cares?

lots of guys use spinning rods to fish flies, most use some kind of clear plastic bubble to help cast them.
Google "fly and bubble" and you will see...

Is the bubble for weight? If so then that sounds exactly like what I want. Because I can't get the fly out too far. I'll look it up now. Thanks alot

Nothing wrong with what you are doing I've done the spin and fly combo before and it was killer on bass and panfish.

The bubble is for throwing weight, and it keeps the fly near the surface if that's what you want. Try to get the smallest bubble you can find. It sounds as though most of the bubbles available are a bit large for you.

If you want the fly to go down, try either a splitshot (convenient but I don't like) or a tiny egg sinker with a stopper of some kind. Depending on the size of the egg sinker, you can use a small swivel, or a "Carolina Stopper", or one of those bubble/float stoppers, or a piece of rubber band, or a knot. You choose.

Fish with what works for you, but you can get a fly fishing setup from Walmart for $20.00, but you need back cast space, unlike with a spinning rod.

I hav'nt used a a bubble and fly rig. But l have read it's been productive. Good advice here all around, guys. I 2nd what NulodPBall said about a fly fishing setup. It dos'nt have to be expensive to get started. And, OTbanjo if what your doing is working for you, and your catching fish, who's got the last laugh?

BTW, if you use bubble/fly... make sure you use the smallest bubble possible. You'll get the same casting distance and a lot less splash

Wow thanks everyone for all of the info. Yeah I've noticed those cheap fly fishing rods for sale, like the starter kits but like you said you need the room to cast. I think I might buy one just because they're so cheap. I might as well use one if I've got the casting room.
