As long as I've been fishing, better yet for the time I've been using Flies, I've never taken the opportunity to learn how to tie my own. I have alot of the equipment that you need to tie, but I just never took the time to learn. I want to learn more than ever now; I think I'm going to get into a class.

Yeah they do. That's actually who I was thinking of doing my classes through, because it's close to my home.

I started tying my own flies after loosing so many at kern and piru creek. I remember one day i lost 10 setups which was 20 flies (dropper combo) which cost me $25-30 after i said forget this, either i learn all the different casts and cast like a pro or i start to tie my own. Therfore i tie my own flies now.

Numbnuts i know the feeling.. top fly + a dropper=== almost $4 each time it happens.. lot more fun and cheaper in the long run to tie your own...

as far as flys go, ill tie wooly buggers, marabu muddlers, muddler minnows, griffiths gnats, ant patterns, and marabous but some stuff are really hard to tie. I wish i could tie dry flys like blue duns and mosquito patterns.

Maybe some of us who want to learn to tie better, or tie at all for that matter, should think about taking a class together, Whata you guys say? I can reasearch where the best classes are in an area that is center to everyone.

Checkout some of the fly tying web sites. you can get some p retty good step by step instructions on how to tie most flys. When i have any questions i visit my fly fishing mentor and work with him on tying. We end up tying flys and talking shop..

Also doing a fly swap really helps. When u need to send out a dozen flys from the same pattern and u want them all to be the best you can produce. u end up tying alot more then a dozen and get pretty good at that type of fly, a good way to learn the basics...a swap might be alot of fun... midge swap would be a good start..something most of us can do... what do u think?

That sounds cool, but I'm more of a beginner than you think! The website thing is cool; but I like the idea of actual in person instruction. Eric, can you please run across the street and grab me a Matt & Tony's? Pastrami would be just fine...oh wait, they're closed right now aren't they?

Tony have you ever tried tying flies. If you havnt its actually pretty easy to tie but it takes some time to perfect it meaning it takes some practice for the fly to come out looking good everytime. But honestly it doesnt need to look perfect for it too work on the water. Also, if you get an instructional videa that helps as well becasue they will go step by step. I think the hardest part is learning things like whip finish but i learned that on the internet so even that is easy.
Just get into it and post if you have any question and the members that tie will help you out.
good luck

there was a nother way to tie it off,i know it wasnt the whip finish. this one was very easy, you would rap the line around your finger 2-3 times and just start rolling it off your finger and onto the hook. then you would tighten it and put some head cement.
