Fly Fishing for Calicos?

Has anyone tried flyfishing for calicos deep sea fishing? Obviously you can't fly fish on an open party boat, but I might be going out sometime soon on my friend's private boat. Can anyone help me here? What type/color flies should I use? What type of sinking fly line? how long of a leader? Is tippet necessary? Thanks.
