Can you imagine?
A high altitude lake, accessable to only those who hoof it a few miles and endure the altitude gain. To gain a perspective of the size of this lake, note the people on the right.
This lake has probably never seen a boat, perhaps a canoe or two., and It's banks have been tested (annualy) by few. She's generally only visited between the late June thaw and the first sign of snow in early to mid fall. How many fish have wintered over in her., and for how many years?
Can you imagine float tubing this lake? Being the only person floating on her? The waters are frigid, the trout will hold in shallow water and should be just beneath the surface. And the entire surface is yours. And say you hook a trout running deep in this, what manner of fish might that be?
Guess you'll have to keep checking back for some answers. I've dreamed of this trip for nearly a year. And the hour of my departure grows near. Float tube, flippers, wet suite, pack stove, tent, sleeping bag... I'll pack it all and endure the pain, to see how close it comes to my dreams. A disaster or nirvana ... who can say? Wont know till I try, I might be insane.
Ok, I'm starting to sound like the 'Cat in the Hat'. But, can you imagine...?

Actually I just got back from Onion Valley, and the lakes were very similar to that. They almost look identical actually. Check out my post under "Northern California Freshwater Reports". It is very beautiful.

Wow that's very beautiful. I could swear I fished a lake that looked exactly like that point before.

Onion Valley is a cool place. It's like a miniture golf course of little lakes. The largest lake in that cluster is Matlock, at less than 1/4 mi length.
The lake I have in mind is 1/2 mi in length and 900ft wide, at an elevation of just over 10,000ft. And, about twice the effort to get to.
Here's another pic the lake I have in mind. This pic of the lakes' inlet was taken from a cliff around 100ft above. Note the blue tent to get some perspective the size. This inlet looks like a prime spot to float or shore fish.
Relax, you'll get the full report. Just don't want show the cards until the hand is played.
Getting back to Onion Valley., those lakes would make for decent float tubing too. The drive into the mountains is a chore., but once your at the campground, the lakes are a convient hop, skip and a jump away.

The picture isn't working Kens. It comes up "Unauthorized" for some reason.

Is the hike by any chance 6.2 miles with about a 1300ft elevation gain?

Bryson - Refresh your browser., should work now.
Wahoo! - Not that far., and a little less alt. gain.
The High Sierra plateau streches some 300+ miles N -> S., with 100s of high alt. lakes. The one I have in mind is somewhat neglected by anglers ... as they can find great limits down below without the effort.
Not going till Sept. 3rd. I'll post a report as soon as I return... plenty of time for anyone to bag it before the snow flies.

I meant 6.2 round trip. And are you sure it's not 1300 feet? I thought it started at 9,070 and ended at 10,380? Or maybe I'm thinking the wrong lake...

Yep, that sounds close enough to be the spot. I'm pretty sure you know it if you've followed my reports. 10,380 is on the mark.
PM it to each other, but leave the lurkers in the leach for now.
BTW: Wahoo!, have you been there yet?

Bryson needs to get a sea plane, we could attach bait tanks to the sleds and get twice as much fishing in half the travel time...

What about landing on patties out in the ocean? I am surprised no one does this... Can you imagine dive bombing crashing fish or "trolling" lol

we could spot a boil from miles away AND get there before anyone else...comercial fishing boats use spotter planes right? we would just be cutting out the middle man.
