Tuna tackle???

I have heard that "Yellowtail" and "Yellowfin" are both possible target species for the "Taco Trip", is there any special equipment you suggest bringing? I have been told to buy some "ring hooks" for flylining sardines and to bring at least one rod with 30lb+ line on it.

you only need a a 20 pound rig for the yellowtail and problably the heavyest rig you need is a 30 pound rig but i have fished 15 for the yellowtail with no problem and all the same for the yellowfin and for hooks all you need is plain regular bronze mustads

BRONZE?!?!?!? what do you think I'm made of money? I will be using the cheapest "Box'O'Hooks" I can find. I just use the #1 or the #2 silver live bait hooks. I plan on taking my 30lb rig "just in case" but I am also going to have my 40lb gear standing by, if I see anything really interesting in the counts a day or two before the trip I just might bring it with me.

Cheap hooks mean cheap hooksets Get yourself some owners and you will realize the reason you weren't hooking those fish is not because they didn't have the whole bait in their mouth it is because the hook wasn't any good

oh also Tuna would be a RARITY. We will have to let the captain know that we specifically want to fish South island for the yellows. Otherwise we may get stuck on la jolla kelp bass bite The yellows are there if you go after them. If I trusted my boat fully I would be down there, but heck I dont trust the federales

The coronado islands are full of yellowtail right now, but, the islands are home to lots of sea lions too. Take a light rig and a heavy rig. You can use the heavy rig to muscle in a yellow before the sea dogs get to it. Wish I can go with you guys, I've got no money to spend on anymore boat trips. Here is a it for the guys that are going. From my experience the first yellowtail caught are by guys that are casting the iron. If you have a jig rod and some tady 45's get ready to be the first to HOOKUP!

KMA!...when a sardine comes back stripped of skin from the anal fin to the end of the tail its because the bait was to big for the bass to take it completely, And I let them chew a long time! (the bass never even got near the hook) By the way I think I forgot to mention on my last trip report I caught my first (and 2nd & 3rd) bass on a drop shot, very cool! I rigged a chartreuse three inch grub on a Octipus hook to 10lb line with a 1/2 ounce weight and bounced it on the bottom... WHAM!, to bad I waited to try it on the last stop...I cant wait til my next trip to try it again.

Yup...off the 3/4 day boat last Thursday, BTW the drop shot techneque should work off of the pier as well. If you use a small grub you will get some perch and a larger grub might score you a bass or corbina. You can also drop shot artifical "minnows" as well...

Fishslayer. If you are getting raked than it is time to switch to anal hooking the bait. That way you know they are going to get the business end of your hook.

Yes I know, some guys were also using fish trap set ups with the lip hook and a treble hook in the tail, they killed a couple of short fish i'm sure. My biggest problem that day was that I was stuck down the side of the boat, ALL DAY and kept getting twisted up with everyone else and I didnt have room to cast away from the boat. And there were these dick heads that when ever they tangled with someone else they would just cut your line and you lost your weight and hook or lure or whatever. I never wanted to throw someone overboard so bad in my life! I HATE PEOPLE!!!

Man do I hate that. Some guy tangled me recently on a San Diego trip. Now remember HE TANGLED ME, he brought everything up and cut MY LINE. Man was I pissed, however he was a dead head that was a big samoan guy that dwarfed me, so I didn't press the issue 100 miles out at sea lol
