Eastern Sierras-Onion Valley-7/25, 7/26 report
I went up to Onion Valley with some boyscouts to go fishing up really high in the mountains. The first day we hiked, we went to Lake Gilbert. We tried there for about 2 hrs, but we didn't hook up. So we took a 10 minute hike to Flower Lake. The second we threw our lines in, we hooked up. We were fishing wet flies under a clear bobber. I hooked up with 2 brook trout there. A lot of the kids hooked up too.
We then decided to go to Hemlock lake to see what it looked like. I had a gold panther martin on, and noticed a big brook trout under a log. I threw my lure at it, and before i even had time to see the lure hit the water, the trout took it. It was the biggest catch out of everyone.
The next day, we decided to hike to Robinson Lake. It was the prettiest lake out of all of them, but there were'nt that many fish. Only 2 guys hooked up there. I also got a chance to play in the snow.
So overall, I had a fun time, but I wish the fishing was better. Out of 9 guys, everyone hooked up except for 2.
These lakes are all a little above 10,000 feet. They have never been stocked, and these are all wild trout. Very few people hike up here.
Here are the pics:
1st and 2nd pic: Brook Trout
3rd pic: A meadow
4th pic: Flower Lake
5th and 6th pic: Gilbert Lake
7th pic: A small waterfall that we drank water out of
8th, 9th, and 10th pic: Lake Robinson

Wow those are some beautiful lakes. Man those are awesome. Too bad you killed the brookies though That second one looks a little bit like a kamloop, but it is probably just a male brookie in full colors.

I drove up to Onion Valley once just to see what was up there, HOLY CRAP is that a drive or what?!? Its straight up and down, if it wasnt for the back country access it would be a total waste. But if you want to take the hike its pretty cool stuff.

Yea I didnt want to kill them, but the boyscouts wanted to cook them for dinner. We only brought home 4. We caught and released about 8 more.

Poor fishees
lol I was just messing with you, but you should of said to your scout master "Isnt it better for the Boy scouts to be beacons of conservation? Since these are native fish and obviously in spawning colors, why should we kill these when right down the road are stocked rainbows? Sir I just dont feel right killing my future, especially in the proud name of the BOY SCOUTS" Say something like that next time

There weren't stocked trout down the road james lmao. We're in the middle of nowhere. And there wasnt a scoutmaster with us, and I'm not in boyscouts, they invited me.

Actually brookies are thick up in that region and their growth has been stunted so DFG actually encourages people to take fish. Brookies are not really trout they are in the char family. And the reason they are so abundant in the back country is because the brook trout that were planted in virtually all back country lake and streams by DFG through in the past several decades have been selected to favor fast growth and early sexual maturation Therefore, they reproduce at and early stage in their life compared to the “original” brook trout which reaches maturity at 2 years old and so that is why they are abundant in the back country.

Sean, you Suck!!! I love Onion Valley!! It's so cool to be able to fish all those small lakes in the same day if you wanted. They're just hikes apart. Great photos. Glad you had a good time. If you go back during end of May, beginning of June...that's the best time. There's usually a major hatch going on around that time and the fishing is great!

Plus, I had no Idea that the thread was from last year. I was wondering why you would go up during the winter. I was thinking to myself, man, there's hardly any snow??!?!? Duh!

Hey Tony, I just got my permit today, so in exactly 6 months I'll have my license. I'll probably be able to do a trip like that around the 20th of August.
