Suisun - Delta Reports 1/11/07
Suisun-Delta: Smith has reason to run for San Pablo. Not to get too
expansive about it, but the sturgeon fishing up this way has been fairly
lousy. The Happy Hooker last went Sunday, fishing "upriver," and managed
to hook one undersize sturgeon, with 15 customers fishing. The water was
48 degrees. Given a choice (like a better tide), Smith said he would
have opted to fish San Pablo Bay. On a happier note, Barry Canevaro
still isn't paying rent for fishing Montezuma Slough as often as he
does. He has tried it for sturgeon a few times (and anchored and soaked
bait at places like Suisun Slough), but the striped bass in Montezuma
are the focus of his business. His most recent trip was Tuesday, and his
group of four caught limits to 11 pounds (the smallest still a scrappy 7
pounds). He's using nothing but shad for bait. More from Canevaro: "This
is true winter fishing. The bite is like a catfish bite," he said, which
sets the mind wandering off to summer and catfish, but that's no fault
of his. "You need a balance bar. When you see the tap-tap, you gently
pick up the rod, you load it up, and you set the hook." He can be
reached at (916) 777-6498. Also: Canevaro is catching most of his fish
at the end of the outgoing tide.
