I tie one up every once in a while... I just dont know how to use them so they just amass in my flybox. I'm OK at some patterns, not too interested in freshwater patterns so much though. More into saltwater streamers and epoxy patterns, although the epoxy is an ordeal and i really suck at that lol.

Well, I only tie the flies that I catch fish on...so that's a total of about 4 patterns (two can be used in salt) so someone else probably should do the fly tying thing if people are interested in dry flies.
If people want to practice throwing flies before we fish anyone is welcome to practice with me...but if it's not surf fishing, you won't get much casting practice with me...unless you consciously choose to practice...surf fishing is perfect for practice casting because you have wind, moving water, and plenty of space behind you. Over by the LB Veteran's hospital, there's a casting pond, and many ponds, lakes are good for practicing also.

learning how to fly tie from books is actually really easy. they do a great job of teaching you (unlike other fishing books that try to describe "how to fish").
I can tie a lot of practical patterns like midges and wooley buggers and a few other stuff but tying anything with wings is hard. if you have any questions, i can do my best to answer them.e

the fly tying can be either relaxing, frustrating, or seem like a chore/work.
it's a chore when you have to make a certain amount before a trip and it's frustrating when you have to learn how to tie some of them but it can be relaxing too when you just sit down to tie a few flies. start off with something a little larger. a Wooley Bugger would be a good choice since it's fairly simple, isn't too small, and actually is a common fly to use. you can try putting different amounts of weight on it and making larger and smaller ones then switch off to a different fly that seems to be similar to that bugger. then one thats similar to the bait you just learned to tie. eventually you'll get a feel for it.

I found ant's to be the easiest, some dubbing fur for the body and a hackle feather around the mid section and trimmed to fit as "legs". Nailed a few bluegill at MSP(Mile Square) back in the day playing around with them.

yeah i've caught bluegill on the ants that i used to tie as a kid. it was fun at GVL. i'd play around with the tiny bluegill around the small patch of cattails they had there.
