rockfishing technique

i just want to see how many people out there fish the rockys with light line like 15 pound test even in 360 feet because every time i am fishing the rockys one of the passengers or even the deckhand tells me i need to use heavyer line and i will lose a quality fish but it seems like i catch more and more quality fish than everyone else. i was fishing on the sunrise early this year and the guy who told me that i was going to lose qaulity fish was the guy that that caught few and small fish and i had the the jackpot and the gave him about a limit of ling cod but keep in mind that we were in mexico so the size limit is smaller

The lightest I've ever used was 20lb. The last time I did shallow water rockfishing was in Ensenada fishing 300+ft with 20lb line. I didn't catch the biggest fish but I did get a lot of quality reds plus lings and other various rockfish. Light line with a long leader had me bring up a fish at least every other drop. That was fun.

When I go shallow water rockfishing (180ft or less), I use 15# line. From 180 - 300, I'll use either 20# or 30#. The problem I'd see with fishing light line that deep is that it will stretch more (unless you're using braid) than the heavier line. That will make it more difficult to get a good hookset and pull a big fish off the bottom before it gets under a rock.

The thing about circle hooks though, is you cant set the hook. You have to let the fish inhale the bait. i dont like them for deepsea fishing.

when you are fishing deep enough you still have to yank on the circle hooks

Um the thing about circle hooks is you dont have to get them to inhale it. I nfact they have to eat it the same way. You just pull instead of set the hook.

I don't know how you can fish with 15 pound test at 360 feet. Way to much strech in the line. I could see doing 30 pound main line and 15 or even lighter leader either connected by swivel or tied together. Better yet would be to use braid as your main line but its frowned upon on party boats. Also if you using 15 # line there's no way you could yo yo a lure at the depth.
