The bluegills were wide open today. I was using meal worms in abut 15 feet of water Just off the North West side of the island. They were all about 9".

That lake is defiantly not the place to go on a holiday. It felt like I was out in the ocean with all the boat wakes and jet skies.

But it was still fun

The bigger ones are great eating and YES! smaller ones are great bait for big bass. I have used this method several times and got great results.

At Laguna Niguel Lake, live bluegill is a KILLER bait for bass.

There is a park lake in Huntington Beach.(I can't remember the name right off hand) but that's all the Bass will hit on there. They won't even look at anything else.

Just in case you didn't know, you cannot use bluegill for bait. Catch em the right way...

True. Here's what the DFG has to say about the use of baitfish in the southern district. This is not the case in all districts however. For more information on other areas, or more detailed information, please see

DFG Fish Regs

I will also post the full regulations in the Open Forum.

§4.10. Bait Fish Use in the Southern District.

Except as provided below, live or dead fin fish shall not be used or possessed for
use as bait in the Southern District:

(a) Dead threadfin shad and live or dead longjaw mudsucker may be used in all
Southern District waters.

(b) Live threadfin shad may be used only at the location where taken.

(c) Golden shiner and red shiner may be used in San Diego County.

These rules apply in all State controlled waters. Of course, private lakes such as Irvine, Laguna Niguel, and SARL may have their own rules.
