Newell's have a love em' or hate em' following. Personally I own 4 and truly believe they are the best casting conventional reels out there.
Here's a list of pros and cons.
Pros- extremely light weight, great casting ability(best reel I've found for fly-lining small baits), moderately priced, easy to clean and take apart, very corrosion resistant.
Cons- Mostly composed of graphite(to reduce weight and make more corrosion resistant), loud, factory drags are not that great (they can however easily be upgraded to HT100's easily), no instant anti reverse.
Hopes this gives you some ideas if they are the right reel for you. One other thing, if your looking to buy one, they go on sale at many tackle stores. You also might want to check out charkbait.com
Cheers,

How does not having antireverse give you a backlash? I think he's just talking about the backplay in the reel handle. Whereas some reels stop instantly, others will move back a fraction of an inch before stopping.

Dude, I personally hate newell's! They suck. I have seen the side plates basically explode on smallish tuna. Heck there is a tape floating out there I think its on the Red Rooster III, with dennis braid and all, and the things just pops off. We use to have them come in all the time. I would personally get a 500 (or 505), accurate frame, some 2000 grit sandpaper, move over to a wet drag system (I think you can get them from Shimano in fact) and you will have a reel that easily outperforms the newell. JMO after selling many of them. Also the noise is usually VERY loud, if you want graphite get the 535, but that's just me. IT's all subjective though.

CST, my point exactly. Love em' or hate em' following. For your typical so-cal inshore fishing, i.e. bass, halibut, whiteseabass, cuda, etc... your not going to run into any problems. JST I've also heard those stories of the newell's busting when fishing for tuna, that's why I use shimano's, accuratized penns, and the such when I do go out after larger fish. Basically if I'm fishing line heaver than 40lbs, none of my newells are used as I prefer two speeds at that point.

Exactly. Some people hate them and some people love them. For awhile there no one would fish anything else for Wahoo other than Newell's, due to their ability to put a wahoo bomb farther out and having higher gear ratio's, but once you get to those fish it is either Accurate or Shimano for me just like ESC said.
