Malibu Pier and Surf 6/29/04

Hit up the Malibu pier with Frank after work yesterday. Right when I got there I saw guys hooking up with the smallest bonita I've ever seen. They couldn't have been more than 5 - 8 inches each. Bait was all over the place - smelt and very small pinheads. Unfortunately, the bigger fish didn't seem to be around. We fished the pier for a couple hours for nothing. When we were packing up, one of the guys next to us hooked into something big, but it broke off.

After the pier, we decide to give the surf a try. We fished with grubs, 3 inch swimbaits, and sand crabs. Frank caught 1 short halibut on a swimbait and I got nothing. Called it a night and got dinner at KFC. Water was very warm yesterday and there were tons of sandcrabs all over the beach. We heard that the fishing has really turned on the last few days over there, but we didn't see much going on. Will probably be back there next week.
