Laguna Niguel Lake Report 2-14-04

Im sorry to hear that you didnt have a great day Capt Lurch.

Well, i finally met wahoo for the first time, and hes a pretty cool guy! Anyway, we went tubing at Laguna Niguel Lake together w/ one of my friends. (CaptLurch came but, you read his story already)

Anyway, we had a pretty fun time. Heres the report:

It was an early early morning bite. They were only biting hard between 6-7. I got on the water at 6:30 and i threw in some chartruese powerbait rolled up in a a worm and dipped in attractant. Literally 10 seconds later, a trout starts taking my line, i set the hook just in time and bring it in. Pretty cool. Then wahoo got there at 7, and RTGHT as he said "hi" to me, i get another hookup. Same rig and bait.

Then my friend catches one on his rod. Same rig and bait. He caught 4 total for the whole day just in different times.

So its 12:00 now, and wahoo hasnt even got a bite yet, and boy he was pretty mad lol. So we park at the boat dock, and WHAM wahoo gets a HUGE hit (i swear the big fish love him, just like that bat ray). Its pulling like CRAZY! He battles the fish for about 30 seconds, then it swims under the boat dock and breaks loose. He was really pissed now. lol. But about 2 min later, he gets a hookup, and its a small hookjaw. So finally he caught one.

My reel had been having some problems this past year, and it breaks every time i go fishing. I wanted to get a new one, but i am broke. So i decided id have to wait. I was pissed off about my reel and i said that any reel would be better than this, and i dont care what type of reel it was, just as long as it was better, and that i would like one really soon.

Then for the rest of the day until 2, it just died. No one on the lake was catching anything. Then at about 2, as the fishing is horrible, i decided to try a spot where i had great luck last trout season. I cast out and let my line sink to the bottom. I felt a tug, but it seemed to be snag. So i reel it in, but suprisingly its letting me reel in line. So im reeling in thinking "ok its just a branch or something". So i reel up, and see this black thing and i thought to myself "o i was right" I reel up more, and too my surprise, it was a FISHING ROD!!! I start screaming "HOLY SH#T!! OMG ITS A FREAKING FISHING ROD!!!" I caught it by the handle on the bottom of lake. It was a shimano rod!! It was a pretty nice rod! The rod was a FX Spinning Rod, and the reel was a R1000. Now i said " thank you god, for hearing my prayer."

So we head out to that place, and we immediately start to get hit. For some reason, the trout hit differently here, and we couldnt seem to get that many. I caught my first hookjaw here (after finally waiting 2 years!!) and wahoo caught another one too. After that we all left and went home.

Yeah, it was a lot of fun. It was great meeting DementedFish and CaptLurch. I couldn't believe it when DementedFish reeled in that trout rod! That was great. We have some good pictures coming so check the photo gallery in the Hook Up Sportfishing Get Togethers section. Fish were all caught on powerbait. Couldn't get them to touch anything else.

That's cool, I know he got some bites on the crawlers, but I didn't know he landed any of them.

I have never caught a trout at LNL on powerbait. I always catch them on a small treble hook with salmon eggs on the bottom. But I also catch mostly hook jaws. Maybe that is what they like.

Right now no. If there were any trout, they'd be around the dam or the creek inlet. Powerbait is usually what I always catch them on.
