Ensenada fishing 7/29/06

I got invited to go on my friends boat out of Ensenada on Friday so I was pretty pumped up. The fishing has been really good down there lately so we were expecting a good trip. We got to our boat at about 8:45 to Coral Marina and unloaded everything, and then went up to the hotel and played some ping pong and pool and went to bed after that. We got up at 4:30, tried to find some bait, found some, but it sucked hard. 3" sardines. Well, we've been hearing some good things about the 238 area, and the terrafins looked promising so we decided to head out. Well, we drive about 30 miles out, and we're about 2 miles away from where we want to start fishing when we look at the dash where the gauges are and notice they're not working. Then all of the sudden it starts smoking black smoke. So we're like "OH SH!T!", turn off the engines and grab the fire extinguisher but as soon as we turned off the engines it stopped smoking. So yup you guessed it, no fishing for us lol. The problem was is that a wire on the starboard engine side leading to the dash melted which caused the smoke, so we were down one engine and had to limp in 30 miles.

So we're going in at about 7 knauts; perfect trolling speed so we say heck with it, we'll troll the way home. Put out the trolling rods and 10 minutes later ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!! Friend grabs the rod, and brings in a 38 pound female dorado. (pics to come) That was it on the troll. On the way in we saw a bunch of bonita in the bay boiling so we picked up a couple of those.

That night at the slip we fished for some Sandies where I picked up 5, including a 4 pound Salico (Sand Bass Calico Bass hybrid-pics to come) and another 2 pound sandie. Oh and btw, we discovered something that is WAY funner than fishing, if you can believe that or not: Free gaffing mackerel. It was one of the funnest things I've ever done, but it was really hard. We had a ton of mackerel swimming around our boat at the slip so we decided to start free gaffing them and having a little competion.

Anyway, no real fishing for us which sucked, hopefully i'll be able to get back down there soon again. Pics to come.

I hate boat problems. If you had access, you probably could've repaired the short and kept going, unless something got permanently fried.

Pics!

38lb female dorado

My 4lb Salico. Notice how I'm holding the fish only like 2 inches in front of my body.

Closer look

Sorry 'bout the boat troubles, but nice reort & fish all the same. Nice pics as always Sean.

Free gaffing macks sounds like a #####.

I'm supposed to be hitting Ensenada this Thur. So hopefully I can get one of those pretty dodo's myself.

Seems like you guys had a great time even with the engine problems. And that 38 lb. dorado is fat--and phat! Great report and pictures! (Someday, I too will be able to go fishing, but until then, I guess I'll have to get my thrills vicariously!
