Starting up fly fishing? Have you ever thought about it, or are getting started to begin fly fishing. There is probably some people on here that have atleast thought about it.
I want to get this forum hopping!

I have just started getting into flyfishing. I got a GLoomis 4 wt rod for christmas, and only started learning about the basics on stillwater nymphing. I am going to be fishing in Dana Point harbor this summer. I am also thinking about fishing for bluegills in Laguna Niguel Lake.

Maybe you were just not using a fly that the trout wanted. What were you fishing? A lake or a river etc.
Demented-
When and where will you be in Oregon durring this summer?

ive fished blue duns royal wulfs, muddler minnows, elk hair caddis, various ant patterns, and olive somethings.
i haven thad a chance to fish rivers so all my fishing has been done in lakes. blue duns have caught me a few crappie at green valley lake and a nice blue gill while night fishing in castaic. the ant patterns have produced a few small bluegill, but that was my first time fishing a fly and i was bored so i was casting in <1 feet of water. i caught my trout in green valley and i caught it on that olive dry fly. as for royal wulfs muddler minnows and elk hair caddis i have been skunked when i have used them.

I have used an elk hair caddis on one lake trip, and that was when the bugs were really out. Trout were jumping all over. So I tosses one out and caught a ton of fish. My suggestion is maybe try a beadhead wooly bugger in either black or olive. They are very deadly to many species. Also maybe "dennys seal bugger". It is basically the same thing but with seal. The seal fur has more action to it then the marabou.

Yeah they are very easy to make and you can alter them with different colors, beads, eyes etc. They are a lot of fun to make and fish!

Were you using the olives for your dries while fishing for them? At what time of day were you fishing them?

I use the Fly and bubble on a spin rod quite a bit...its better than carrying two rods when hiking a stream or on my float tube...

Yep thats the name. I use them in the evening most of the time. We have tried using spin gear once in Yellowstone. We put the bobber on about 14 inches up or so and caught some. I have not ever done it since though. Try using some size 14 tan elk hair caddis on the surface when they are jumping. I have had great luck with them on lakes when the trout are surfacing.

Not a "bobber", a "bubble"! You know the small clear plastic bubbles that you can fill with water for longer casts and they slide up the line. To keep from spooking fish put a bubble above a Carolina Keeper on 2lb line at least 5 feet above the fly, I never fill it more than half full of water. I use a 7 foot rod when ever possible and have used this set up with dry flies and nymphs both, it kicks butt.
