SF - San Pablo Bay Updates 6/15/06

S.F.-San Pablo: The live-bait boys played nice Wednesday, with old
grudges seemingly forgotten, friendships forged, family bonds reunited,
warm fuzzies all around. And all it took was the New Huck Finn calling
the other boats onto the school of bass it had found. If you know these
boats, you know about the infighting and various rivalries. And, knowing
all that, it should strike with utter amazement that NHF skip Jay
Yokomizo would call the Smith family to fish. To make sense of the
madness, we go to Yokomizo: "I didn't. I called everyone into the fish."
So, there you go. Jay laughed a little after he said that. Then thought
about it, and added, slowly, "We're all in this now. And it's getting
harder and harder to make a living at it. If we don't work together, as
hokey as it sounds, none of us (is) going to make it." After that, a
guacamole moon rose up and bit a feathered giraffe. But where were we?
Right, the South Bay, over San Bruno shoals, bass all around, big boats
in on them, lines baited with live anchovy, limits going in the bags.
There were halibut, too. The NHF (510-654-6040) would end up with 19
limits of striped bass to 16 pounds and 20 halibut to 20 pounds. Of the
Smiths, James on the California Dawn (510-417-5557) reported a
staggering 31 limits of bass to 15 pounds and 17 halibut to 25 pounds.
Suisun-Delta: There still are sturgeon around, many of them, there just
aren't as many anglers proving the odd and supremely ancient fish exist.
Most of the action, as it is, is back in Honker Bay, with the usual
baits working. Majority of the fish, however, are outside the narrow
slot size, with most on the lengthy end of the must-release parameter.
The popular choice is/are striped bass, which are working through the
Delta on their way to the water under the aforementioned live-bait
boats. Bait (though not necessarily live) is key here, as well, with
most soaking sardines, ghost and grass shrimp and shad (frozen is about
all you'll find, if you can even find it). Top spots: Honker Bay, Chain
Island, Sherman Lake, Sherman Island, Decker Island and around the Rio
Vista Bridge.
