Tackle:
This is very subjective, you will hear a lot of different ideas when it comes to necessary tackle. Please note that you do not need all of this tackle to attend a fishing trip of this type. Here are my personal recommendations for your convenience:
Hooks:
(
Anchovies)
4 packs of #1 Owner Ringed Flyliners (Model # 5106R)
4 packs of #2 Owner Ringed Flyliners (Model # 5106R)
2 packs of #1 Owner Ringed Mutu Circle Hooks (Model #5163R)
2 packs of #2 Owner Ringed Mutu Circle Hooks (Model #5163R)
(
Sardines / Small Macks)
4 packs of 1/0 Owner Ringed Gorillas (Model # 5105R)
4 packs of 2/0 Owner Ringed Gorillas (Model # 5105R)
4 packs of 3/0 Owner Ringed Gorillas (Model # 5105R)
4 packs of 4/0 Owner Ringed Gorillas (Model # 5105R)
I personally like the Mutu’s and I always like to go ringed. I am personally going to order the propacks instead of the “4 packs of”, but I put that up there for you. You may only use ten hooks the whole trip, but it’s always good to be over prepared when it comes to a semi long range trip. If anyone thinks there should be any other hook sizes or types up there let me know, but I am pretty partial when it comes to owner, but hayabusa, and other “premium” hooks are good as well. Sure mustad are cheaper, but when you are on a 2 day killing albacore do you really want .25 cents a hook to come in the way?
Sinkers:
(
Rubbercore)
Several packs each of ½ ounce to 1 ounce rubbercore sinkers. Try to get a good assortment and range of everything from 1/2ounce to the full ounce.
(
Sliding Sinkers)
1/8th ounce to full ounce sizes, again good assortment with plenty in reserve.
sinker rigging tip: Texas rigging is my preferred method. To run my main line to a barrel swivel with my sliding sinker rig, with a foot or two of fluorocarbon leader to my ringed hook. Killer setup. Some swear more by rubbercore and during a hot bite, retying up a texas rig could lead to costly mistakes so be ready for both scenarios.
Terminal Tackle (Other):
(Sampo Barrel Swivels)
Match the swivel to the line. You do not want to big or too small. Also I like a black finish not a high flash swivel. Some say go with high flash as it appears to be a scale coming off the injured bait…
Dikes
preferably one with easy access on your belt.
Rod Belts
Personal preference whether to bring. You hook a bluefin you may wish you had it.
Fishing Rag
Be nice to hook to your belt easy handling to clean off slime and blood!
Lures:
Trolling Lures - 3 to 6 Zuker Tuna Feathers
Preferred Colors - Mexican flag, mean Joe green, purple & black and Zucchini)
1-2 Cedar plugs (make sure they are tuned)
Iron
4 - 8 Salas 6X-Jr. Blue/white, Blue/Chrome, Dorado, and Fried Egg
1 - 3 Salas 6X Blue/white
Again this is very subjective so I am going to let people chime in on what they think should be brought. For Iron I will bring Blue and white, purple and black, and blue and chrome… I will also be bringing some big hammers and some cool plastics I bought. Again this is subjective and we will have more information as the trip comes up.
Rods and Reels:
Another subjective. Most landings suggest you bring a single 20-25lb outfit with a 7- 8ft medium to light action rod and a Penn 535 or Avet MX. If you need to buy a setup for this trip than that would be a good start. You can also go down and speak to one of the employess at your local tackle shop. Not only do they have the long range experience, but they can get you into an affordable outfit for the trip and even help with terminal tackle. If you need help finding a local tackle shop, just PM one of the moderators.
What I am bringing:
Calstar GFGR 800XL-C matched with a Calcutta 400 for 15lb test
Calstar GFGR 800XL-C matched with a Avet SX for 20lb test
Calstar GFGR-800M matched with Avet MXL2 for 30lb test
Calstar GFGR-765XL matched with an Avet JX for 40lb test
Keep in mind, the bluefin have been in US waters this year so the 40lb test will help you out a lot.
Line (monofilament)
Another subjective thing. I will be using big game, inshore for the 12lb if I can find it… But others prefer ande, izor, use what makes you comfortable and that you trust.
Fluorocarbon
I am going to bring some Seaguar fluorocarbon in 20, 25, 30 and 40lb test. I will wait to see what the “setup” is at the time, but 30lb will probably be my go to line. If you are just going to fish with rubbercore, than don’t even worry about fluorocarbon.
Extras
Clothes:
Duffel Bag or Backpack, Pants, Shirts, Socks, Shorts, Light Jacket, Deck Books, Hats, Light Rain Gear (Poncho, etc…) Sunglasses (polarized with security straps), Toiletries (Bath Towels, Shampoo, Soap, Toothbrush, toothpaste – I may just bring a big bottle of shampoo, conditioner, and liquid soap and we can all just use that)
Additional things to bring:
*Bring extra cash
*Extra food (snacks, candy chips, etc.) for your personal stash
*Camera (photo or video)
*personal CD player(discman), IPOD, etc.
Seasick Medications:
Bonine, scopaline patch, Dramamine, etc.,.
Cooler:
BIG COOLER limits will equal approx. up to 150lbs of filets to take home. Coolers must be left behind in your vehicle. Coolers are not allowed on board.
California Fishing License:
In case fish are in US waters… IF so no limit in California, So see the cooler suggestion and go bigger. Read the reports to that point to see where the fish are…
Payments
(please NOTE that all payments, after being made, are "NON-REFUNDABLE" regardless of attendance status)
For Payment and Payment Options; please PM Jon Sellars (Wahoo!)click the link
Money Orders All payments
MUST be in approx 45 days prior (May 20th, 2006) to the boat leaving to insure we can fill vacant spots if any. Please write
Hook Up Charter in the memo section. However, PM me for payment details.
Personal Checks
If you wish to pay by personal check that can be arranged, however I am going to take this on a case by case basis. You would have to pay by May 7th, 2006 to insure we can fill vacant spots if any. The check writer will be responsible for covering any returned or bounced check fees that might occur due to insufficient funds. I prefer not to go personal check. Money order or a cashiers check from your bank is fine. PM me for payment details.
Paypal
I have no problem using paypal, however I will need to charge $12.50 per ticket for paypal to cover the 3% fee + transaction fee they will charge me. Please send a
PM to me
Cash Payments
No cash payments please. You may just as easily obtain a money order at any check cashing place or most grocery or liquor stores for only a few cents.
Payment Arrangements
They can be made, however realize we are filling up fast. I would need a deposit of size and a guarantee of full payment in a time frame. Just need to make it fair for everyone.
A Little History on the Dolphin II
The actual owner of the boat is going to be taking us out, so it should turn out to be a great trip. The boat is historically well known for getting into the albacore as well, so that should never be a problem. For example last year, a slow year for albacore, on the dates we are going they limited out. This shows great promise and yes it does have a refrigerated fish hold for perfect preservation of our catch.
Historical catches on the dates we are going for the Dolphin II:
07-10-2005 2 Day 22 220 Albacore
07-08-2004 Overnight 17 85 Yellowtail, 24 Albacore
07-10-2003 Overnight 14 33 Albacore
07-10-2002 Overnight 11 55 Albacore
07-10-2001 Overnight 18 18 Albacore, 8 Yellowtail, 2 Dorado
It should be noted that this is better than most overnight boats for those days and all 2 days during this time had limits of albacore. Again notice the 2 day limits. I assure you on these other trips if they would have gone for a two day it would have been limits as well.
