They work great and imitate the worm so much. You can get a chenille color called something like worm brown and there is a red that also works great. Get a egg hook or a hook that has a big bend in it and what ever size you want. Then wrap the shank with the thread, some people also use red wire. Cut a piece of ultra chenille and tie 2 different areas down on it. One, at the bend, then wrap under the chenille up the shank until you are right before the eye(not crouding it). Tie that down now. Then wrap over and over under the chenille at the head so that you can get the tip to stick up more. They are very easy flies to tie. I hope I explained it good enough.
Here are some links:

Here is a picture that pretty much explains it:

also, to put a taper on each side of the worm, burn it a little with a lighter or matches.

Vernille, is the ultra fine chenille.
Panfish really like the small nymphs that look like trash. (Fly box rejects)

To me, they work better in moving water...ie the kind of stuff I usually avoid

Hi Guys,
I fished San Juan Worm for the first time this weekend on Hot Creek and Upper Owens. There was one section on Hot Creek where 5 different people passed through without sticking any fish (me included)with the regular stuff (nymphs, drys, etc.) On my way back I threw on a dirty version of the San Juan Worm. I immediately stuck three fish with 10 drifts! I felt like I was cheating... but it was fun! I am now a believer in the San Juan Worm. Also stuck some fish on the Upper Owens with this pattern. Anyhow, they do work!
Good luck!
Mo

I heard they work well at the right time. I've got a version I'm dying to try for perch... if I ever get out there. If I have any luck, I'll share it.

Yeah, they work pretty good in those clear creeks that I stay away from
You can tie a variation that looks like a mealworm if you "brown" one end of the light colored chenille.

Ray, don't you remember the last time I saw you that other guy fishing was catching some on small (1/4") SJWs.
Imitates the chiro's larval stage.
