Went out on The Legend for an overnight. Left San Diego at 2200 and stopped to pick up good size sardines. Headed way down 20 miles past Ensenada and arrived at 0330. Slept the night away in 6,000 feet of water. Started fishing at 0530 at various small kelp paddies. Some hookups here and some there. Nothing wide open. I ended up with not even a bite for the day, but had fun. Only 1 guy got a limit. The fish were really scattered and no paddie contained more than a few fish. Fish averaged about 10 pounds. Wish we could have fished more, though. Out of the whole time, we had about 4.5 hours of fishing time. I was really surprised that the boat went really slow and it took so long to move. I've been on that boat in the past and they have a excellent crew and captain. When you stop at a paddy you need to be one of the first guys to grab the best sardine and cast it right next to the kelp. The first baits closest to the paddy will get bit first if any fish are holding on it. If nothing happens on a paddy after about 10 minutes the captain usually moves. Trolling working great too. Those yellows love the green or mexican flag zukers. Thats probably why he was going slow since some one probably had some trolling lines out. Fishing offshore has slowed a little but the inshore fishing right now is still excellent.
