Alamitos bay on mothers day
Started off the morning making bait at Belmont pier. Water was a ugly brown and even smelled a little. Getting bait was extremly hard. Most were queenfish and shiner perch. Got my tube in the water around 8:15 and half my bait was dying with that stinky brown water in my bucket. Once I was in the water the live half was doing good. Well first bait in the water, slammed, and stripped off. Second bait caught 18'' halibut. Third bait caught me a 16'' butt. Fourth bait caught another 16'' butt. Now I'm using my last live bait. So I work my bait towards an area that has lots of smelt. Once I got there I tried making bait from my tube for the first time. It was hard a first because I kept dropping the smelt but eventually I got enough. My dad shows up on the beach with my family for a picnic so I kick back and caught a 17'' halibut on the way. Spent some time with my mom, had lunch, and pumped some shrimp so they could fish off the beach. They brought my kayak so I also took my mom for a ride around the bay. She was freaked out and having fun at the same time. After all that I jumped on the yak and started drifting my smelt. Paddled to a hot spot in front of a certain house and caught two shorts right away, they were about 16 and 18''. When I got into deeper water I got slammed. It a nice fish that's turning my yak all around. This fish is legal no doubt. Half way off it comes off >: ( . Caught one more short after that. My brother wanted to paddle around the bay so I gave him the yak and jumped into my tube again. Ended up catching 3 more shorts 16-18'' and lost another good fish. Lots of action but no big fish today.
