Hawaii 2/2/ - 2/6
Went to Hawaii for vacation, Oahu. It rain almost the whole time there, 3 out of 4 days. Steve has been there a few time so he was the appointed tour guide (over the phone). He told me to check out the fisherman warf for charter, but when they told me not to waste my money because the fishing has been suck because of the rain and strong wind. He told me if only I had gotten there a day early fishing would have been prime. That is when he showed me the Mahi Mahi that they had caught the day before. Scratch that plan. Plan B, I got myself a car rentle and drove around the whole island. First stop was North Shore. The wind was too strong to swim so we drove a bit more. I spotted a few locals shore fishing so I went to check it out. They had three Papio (jack crevalle ) and before I was started to walk off they hook up a fish that I had no idea what it was but it look cool. As we were driving away from North Shore and into the Windward side, I spotted more guys surffishing. They were going for bone fish. They said that the bone fish gets to about 1 to 3 pound off this area. Now I am piss that I did not bring any of my gears. I went to a small mini mart call Kays to look foe some gear to buy (advise by the locals). $35 dollor later I had a Shimano rod and reel, some hooks, weight, and a small box of squid. The locals told me to fish the one pier in Heeia and one in Kailua. It did not look like anybody had any luck except one guy. He was fishing close to the shore off the pier and was catching cool looking trigger fish, butterfly, and other ones that I could not remember the name. It was still rainning but I did not spend almost $3000 for my family to get washed out. We hit up some local places and sample thier home made food, it was gooood. Fish (grouper)and chips, lua lua with rice (my favorite), and many different kind of Ahi poki. The wife and kids went to bed early, so I took my new rod and hit up the Fisherman Warf. I was using a sliding sinker and long strips od squid. It was wide open talapia or some sort and one of these red fish. I was happy that I got in a little fishing before I head home, but it got better. My drag started to run. I was in trouble. This thing is big and I have the crappies reel. There was another local fishing by so I called out for a net and some help. At first he thought that I had snag, but when he saw what was at the end of the hook he ran to get his net. It was about 8 inch in diameter, what the hell. Anyways, we manage and landed my first jack crevalle. I think it is about 14 inch. He told me that he live on the island his whole life and only caught two that size. He said that I look like a bass tournament fishing guy the way I was swtting my hook and thought that I was a local. I called it a night at 5 in to morning with more talapia. My new friend was using 2 inch lizard fish as bait and a 4 foot leader. He skunk for the night. I went to do some snorkling and saw some huge bone fish and others that I did not know. It was a treat to see a green turtle also. I try to go back to Kailua to do some more fishing but had no luck. The locals there hook me and my famly up with some goat fish that they had caught earlier. They would swim thier bait out pass the reef and planted in the sand and swim back, how cool was that. That is it, and thanks for your time. I will check out the Fred Hall show in Del Mar next.

Great pics. I wont say it sucked and feel bad because it rained since you were in HAWAII and I wasnt. Sounds like you had a good time.

Nice catches Dan!!
You got a big eye Squirrel fish (non-game fish...impressive),
Picasso Trigger (non-game fish...impressive);
some sort of Cardinal fish??? (non-game fish...impressive)
and a Black Trevally (definitely a gamefish and definitely impressive!!! )
The Trevally is either a Black Trevally( Caranx lugubris), or if it's got little tiny blue spots on the side (which I can't tell from the glare in the picture) then it's a Blue-spotted Trevally ( Caranx bucculentus) either way I'm envious

Hey Tony, the fish has no spots. I did not mention that it took me about 15 min to land the fish with the plastic reel. The drag was skipping and the line was 6 pound of something old. The fish got itself snag a few time but I was taught right and took my time. It was mind blowning. I was in a place that I have never been, and fish with the cheapest, oldest, and it was raining the whole time. When I set the hook and the drag went off, I was running up and down the dock hoping and praying that I do not lost the fish. It was amazing. I still can not believe it. By the way, did I mention that I ran into Chuck Liddell from UFC at LAX when we got back. Could you imagin how much better this trip would have been if it was sunny the whole time.

So then it was a Black Trevally! I guessed it right the first time. They get a little darker as they get older.
I'm really happy that you got the opportunity to do that, Dan. Those Black Trevally get a little more than double that size that you caught, so you got a pretty good size one IMO. What did you do with it? Give it away, eat it, feed it to the other fish???
You ran into Chuck huh?? lol! right on!
