Glad I found this site!
Hello,
My name is Jean. I'm 23 and have been into fishing since I was very young. However, was never very knowledgable on proper technique, bait, tackle, etc. Only been experimenting and using what works for me. That's why I'm here. Looks like a lot of great expertise I can benefit from. I am currently into pier and surf fishing, but would love to get into some deep sea and freshwater lakes and streams soon. Anyways, I would greatly appreciate any advice from you guys on good spots close to L.A. for any kind of fishing, whatever it is you find the most rewarding. Thanks for your time, and great to meet you all.
-Jean

Thank you, I mostly fish Hermosa, Santa Monica, and Goleta Pier. Once in a while I fish Carpenteria SB, and occasionally Cachuma Lake. I'm really looking into finding a lake close to L.A. where I might find some action. Any suggestions?

Castaic, Piru, and even Casitas are closer to you than Cachuma. All of those are large public lakes that have great fishing and are north of you. Castaic is probably closest. I like float tubing or kayaking the small lake (called the lagoon) that they have there. Great bass fishing and there are some big stripers in the main lake.
Goleta pier is my favorite pier in so cal! I've fished there quite a bit. I've actually pulled up some nice sized ling cod there and tons of rockfish from the kelp out on the right side.
You might also want to try the Malibu pier. Good variety and there can be a very good bite sometimes.

Hey Jean, welcome to Hook Up. I'm in Oxnard so I'm not that far from you. As far as Piers go, Goleta is cool but it's kinda far. How about Ventura, or Oxnard(i.e Pt. Hueneme Pier)? If you ever wanna hit 'em up, I'm sure Jon -user name: (Wahoo!) and I would be glad to fish with you. Surf Fishing spots are one of my specialties as well as Jon has a great Surf Fishing location sensibility!
Cachuma is a great lake, but again kinda far (Though I'm not opposed to road trips, actually like 'em) but like John said there's Piru Lake, Castaic (which held a world record largemouth bass), and there's of course Lake Casitas in East Ventura. 4 out of 10 of the wolds biggest Largemouth Bass have come out of Lake Casitas.
If you want to get into some offshore stuff we do organized Custom Charters often and we have a 2 day long range charter coming up as well as a Surf Fishing Tournament also. You can find info to both events in the Southern California Saltwater Message Board forum.
Glad to have you here. Hope you stick around become a permanent member of Hook Up!

Tony & Jon-
Thank you for the advice, Castaic is a great idea and will be going there as soon as the weather clears up! I had no idea there was even a pier in malibu, but I think that will become my new L.A. spot since SM is getting pretty weak.

Welcome aboard, the members are very friendly with information and very willing to help. Don't worry about being a rookie to the deep, cause so am I. There's a fishing show coming Wednesday through Sunday and over 350 free seminars. The site will be meeting up and walking about, feel free to come along for the ride along.
