40 lb leader?

Hey guys. well, if u read my report on the HUGE fish i lost at San Clemente Pier, you would understand why im asking this question. I was using 20 lb mono line, and it just completely snapped. Im thinking that this is too light line. So, basically here is my question: Do you think it is a good idea to attach a 40 lb leader of regular Triline Big Game on to it? Will it make a difference? Im thinking that if i do this, it will put more pressure on the barrel swivel, which will result in less line breaks. Basically, i fish for sharks and rays. I saw a guy who was using 30 lb with 60 lb leader, and he caught a HUGE ray. Any thoughts?? Thanks.

I fish with straight 20 or 25# and it works for me. I don't even use a swivel. I use a couple carolina keepers (1 or 2 depending on how much weight I'm using) and have a sliding sinker above them. That way there is only 1 knot - the one at the hook.

have you seen the technique were they tie only a weight (3-6 ounces, usually pyramid) onto the main line and chuck it out. then they have a huge snap swivel with a leader and a live bait hook with a live fish nose hooked on it. Once the line is cast they snap on that leader and let it slide down the pierand into the water. while its sliding, and before the fish hits the water, you jerk your rod up so the fish goes a little farther down the line.
Maybe that would be more preferable.

don't be a donkey keep the 20 - 30 pound line straight. no swivel. Try a different line. big game line is the best but its bomb for casting. not for how strong it is. If you notice how much softer it is then other lines. thats what makes it cast so well. it just melts off the spool. go and get some P-line or Max. in the same test and you'll do fine. 30 pound P-line is almost like 20-25 pound Big Game in diameter

Wow I havent seen that technique in al ong time, but we use to do that in the boy scouts. That's where I learned it anyway. Did it on a night trip. Caught a lot of rays that way.
