the line going to your bobbin is parallel to the hook shank, and stays free to move...it goes up to the spring thingy and then back down to the hook in the end of the tool, and this part of the thread is what you circle around the hook shank four or five times, then pull steadily on the bobin (keeping the spool light) so that the springy thingy gets closer to the fly. You can slip the line off the springy thingy and pull everything tight, so now all that extra line is on the bobbin side of the fly....or do a bunch of half-hitches and apply some zap-a-gap.
