it should be the same length as the shank. just like sean said about 3/4 length of the whole hook.l And pick hackle fibers 2 to 2 1/2 the size of the hook gap.
take a picture of one now and then a take a picture in a month or so and u will get to see how much better your flys will start looking. the same thing for sean, he will be tying some great looking flys reallly soon and not just his midges. i bet he will be selling streamers and nymphs in no time.

i dont have much control over the hackle size. the black hackle i bought was all the same size but the olive hackle came in a different size. i think it was chinese saddle hackle or something...

What size streamers r u tying? if u want i can mail u some hackle in a couple of colors in the right size. i have brown, black and grizzly. after a year plus of tying i have just started buying capes. it was easier for me in the past just to get some hackle from my buddy

im tying them in size 12, 10, 8 and a few colorfull buggers in size 4, i'll put up some pictures when i get a few more done but the size of the hackle seems ok. my main problem is handling the marabou.

the hackle looked fine but your marabou tails seemed to be a little long. they will still kick ###. i can't tell from the pics if u used any crystal flash but if u didn't next time add some to give your tails a little bit more color and sparkel.
good job.

I have so many fly tying and fly fishing books it's ridiculous. I'll be tying streamers and that crap in no time once I find the money and time.

do you guys have a problem with your thread snapping while you're tying a fly? it happens sometimes and its not always from hitting the hookpoint.

A good thing to do to answer questions like this, (like I mentioned in another thread), is google "Fly Fishing Flies" and check out other patterns and match up the one's you're tying to what you see on-line. Copying is the name of the game when it comes to tying flies. Then eventually you start having your own ideas to modifying patterns and make up patterns of your own.

I'm gonna go out and buy me a new vice this week ( i think) I have a friend who knows the owner of ABEL products (Steve Abel), and since they're based here in Camarillo, Ca. I think I'm gonna look into getting one of thier custom painted vices. They're way expensive($450.00 retail for regular Platinum color and $800.00 for the custom anodyzed), but they're considered one of the better vices out there right now. I think I can get a heck of a deal on it through the owner of the company. I hope.
