Fishing report
THE BAYS
SUISUN: Jordona Santiago of Martinez Bait and Tackle reported good fishing last
week. There's plenty of sturgeon to be had and a little striper action as well if
the wind goes away. Much of last week was difficult at best, but this week looks
more promising. The good news is that all the fish that were caught are still
concentrated at the west end of the Mothball Fleet and out in front of the Martinez
Marina. Grass and ghost shrimp combos, pile worms and salmon roe are getting it
done.
David Smith of Martinez caught a 5.5-pound, 24.5-inch sturgeon, his first keeper, at
the Ozol on nightcrawlers, Carl Moyer of Concord caught a 54-inch, 46.9-pound
sturgeon at the first row of ships (west end) using a grass and ghost shrimp combo,
and Ed Gonsalves of Oakley caught a 62.5-inch, 58.7-pound sturgeon at the first row
using grass shrimp. John Fowler of Martinez caught a 79.2-pound, 70-inch sturgeon at
Buoy 2 on grass shrimp, Joseph Fraga of San Pablo caught two stripers totaling 23
pounds drowning grass and ghost shrimp combos at Buoy 2, and Don Gibbons of Vallejo
caught a 59-inch, 45.5-pound sturgeon at the first row on a grass/ghost combo. James
Thompson of Martinez caught a 65-inch, 53.7-pound sturgeon at the glomar on a
grass/pile combo.
Tony Lopez of McAvoy's Bait said sturgeon are starting to bite around Middle Ground,
Big Cut and Montezuma Slough and Garnet Point and the Firing Line have been good
places for stripers. Tony Ratliff caught a 56-inch, 50-pound sturgeon near Crockett
in 45 feet of water using ghost shrimp, Cleat Shully caught a 83-pound, 63-inch
sturgeon on ghost shrimp at Snag Island, and Jeff Lostak and Bill Hayes combined to
catch a 80-pound, 69-inch sturgeon in the Big Cut. Laura Jean Sharp caught her first
keeper sturgeon, a 64-inch, 67-pounder on ghost shrimp and pile worms at Middle
Ground.
Dave Haro caught a 41-pound striper at Garnet Point to win the Dockside fishing
derby He also caught a 35-pounder and a 25-pounder. John Harris was second place
with his catch of a 35.5-pound striper. Joshua Klute took first place in the
sturgeon competition, catching a 102-pounder at Montezuma Slough.
